Screen test

Not only do they look great but they help control temperature and light within the house. What am I talking about? Why the screens that clad this reworked extension to a heritage house in Melbourne by Wolveridge Architects.A contemporary extension with heritage overlays. It's what Australian architects excel at.

Urban oasis

A new extension hidden from the street. Contemporary meets heritage. Walls of glass versus walls of Federation red brick. Inside and out merge while light and cool breezes cross thresholds of sliding glass. Travertine floors and timber slat ceilings. Serene and introspective, the perfect urban oasis. Stalking poolside living in Paddington

It's almost de rigueur to have a pool in Australia. Well if not a strict rule then a definite want. The idea of spilling out of an open plan family living/dining/kitchen area to an al fresco entertaining space beside a pool is top of our wish list. My wish list would be complete if there was also a heritage building attached. An inner-city Sydney suburb would sweeten the deal. Something a little like this Paddington house. I don't even have to live in the house. Perhaps they'll let me take up residence in the studio at the end of the garden. Link here while it lasts.

Stalking in a family home in Melbourne

Today I'm stalking in the Melbourne suburb of Surrey Hills. Just a simple Edwardian home chock full of period features with a modern open-plan extension and the obligatory pool. Think leadlight windows and fretwork transoms, fireplaces and generously sized rooms. Everything is in a very restrained neutral palette, elegant, refined, period perfection as you would expect from a tastefully restored historic home but then ... welcome to the 21st century family livingin the new addition. The perfect merge of old and new. Link here while it lasts.
