"Sleek and minimal with a limited colour palette" could be design-speak for "hard and lifeless" but not with this NY apartment by 1100 Architect. Accents of wood and jute with layering of textures create a warm, modern home. Anyone else go weak at the knees for walls of steel and glass windows?
Like a new industrial skeleton within an old brick skin, this 250m2 warehouse conversion in inner-city Melbourne is a mixture of intimate spaces and open voids, family space and public face. It seems this week that Kim and I have been travelling the same design path. Our focus has been on fabulous Australian design. This East St Kilda House by Melbourne-based interior design and architectural practice MEME is yet another stellar example. Clean, modern lines with a palette of whites and greys warmed by wood. The recurring arch motive references the building's original Spanish Mission style with new windows and doors in black steel adding another layer to the link. Tactile, robust but strikingly contemporary.
No it's not déjà vu. I'm not reposting. Look up. Perched atop the Stout & Co. Amsterdam building is an expansive black box. Standing on the street craning your neck you'll notice large walls of windows and what appears to be a tree growing on the rooftop garden. When a classic Art Nouveau era house with beautiful windows and amazing old tile floors meets ultra contemporary furniture and fittings a little magic happens.
