Little Black Shack

Yesterday I stalked a multi-million dollar house on Sydney's Pittwater, all black and glass and steel. It was fabulous no doubt but I'll let you into a secret. I'm a simple girl who likes simple things, beautiful, simple things I admit. If I had the choice between spending the weekend in yesterday's mansion or today's fibro shack I think I'd choose this Little Black Shack. Simple. I mean look at that view!

A beach house on the Costa Brava

When the location is this amazing and the view is to die for, when the house is simple in its bones and that's a good thing, when all you want is a place to gather and make wonderful family holiday memories then this might just be the house for you. The house is on the Costa Brava in Spain and the sympathetic restoration and renovation by Nook Architects allows the house to remain true to its traditional, mediterranean origins while providing a stylish, contemporary living space.

A modern lakeside cabin in Montana

Sitting lightly on its site this modern take on a log cabin just shows that "cabin" does not equate with roughing it. Simple, stylish and taking advantage of a stunning view. What more could you want? How about a boathouse studio as well? Northshore Cabin by Pearson Design Group.

A 100 year old renovated farmhouse

I wanted to share another delicious project by the super talented folks of Vancouver design firm PlaidFox Studio. Bet you'll want to move to a farmhouse by the time you get to the end of this post! This 100-year-old farmhouse underwent a complete head-to-toe renovation. Teaming up with Home Star BC we painstakingly modernized the crumbling farmhouse while maintaining its original west coast charm. The only new addition to the home was the kitchen eating area, with its swinging dutch door, patterned cement tile and antique brass lighting fixture. The wood-clad walls throughout the home were made using the walls of the dilapidated barn on the property. Incorporating a classic equestrian aesthetic within each room while still keeping the spaces bright and livable was one of the projects many challenges. The Master bath - formerly a storage room - is the most modern of the home's spaces. Herringbone white-washed floors are partnered with elements such as brick, marble, limestone and reclaimed timber to create a truly eclectic, sun-filled oasis. Overall, the project proves that bolder, more colourful strokes allow a home to possess what so many others lack: a personality!!

Captains Rest

Far, far away on the magical island of Tasmania is a secluded fishing hamlet. Not so much a hamlet, more a collection of historic shacks on the water's edge. It's beautiful beyond belief. That's why it's a world heritage area. It's just where I crave to be right now. I want to ignore that it's Monday. I want to escape to a simple shack, curl up before the fire with a book and wonder what sort of fish you're going to catch for dinner. Yes there's room for one more. You can fish can't you? The name of this magical getaway? Captains Rest.
