Stalking the girl with the pearl earring
A long, narrow, one bedroom apartment in a complex with great facilities. So often the private space pales in comparison with the public areas. But the girl with the pearl earring seems to have settled in a stylish pad. 80 m²and in most part only 3.2 m wide. Slick finishes, mirror and drama. Stalking an apartment in Redfern, Sydney. The barns
Over the years a jumble of 19th century barns were moved and remodeled, added to and almost disappeared beneath new work. Owners came and went until the current occupants engaged architectural firm Christoff : Finio to add their layer to the buildings. That's what so many old buildings are ... layers. Layers of new work and old, layers of materials, layers of lives and layers of meanings. Creating a new home from this jumble of layers doesn't always mean stripping back to basics. Sometimes it just means rationalising, reworking, rearranging and revealing to reveal the beauty.
Pool house
My first question on seeing this project by 3rd UNCLE was "If this is the pool house what is the house like?!" My next question was "How do they get the guests to go home?" Almost simultaneously I was wondering when I was moving in. An oasis at the end of the garden with just enough mid century references to keep me happy. Sadly 3rd UNCLE is no more. The good news? It is now three firms ... +tongtong Arriz & Co and Paul Syme architect.
Antokolsky penthouse
How about a dose of modernism to make you want to de-clutter and enjoy some concrete? The Antokolsky penthouse by Pitsou Kedem Architect is pretty spectacular, and pretty freaking huge at 680 m². So not only can you do laps up and down its massively long corridor, you can then go take a dip in the rooftop pool and enjoy the views of Tel Aviv. My favourite touch is the Ingo Maurer Lucellino lights - a longtime favourite of mine.
