Georgian minimalism

An almost derelict Grade II listed Georgian town house in Marylebone, London has been brought back to life by McLaren.Excell. With many originally features concealed or ripped out, the architects revealed, restored or replaced like for like. Where they could, contemporary inserts were placed within the fabric of the building clearly contrasting with the old but using materials sensitive to the existing house.

Home 11

Light floods through generous skylights into this repurposed former garage in Amsterdam by i29. Clean lines, contemporary materials, simple spaces that speak for themselves. Stark white with walls of oak and accents of black all grounded by a stunning mossy green and white carpet.

Uptown prewar

Lawd half mursey I adore this New York dwelling by architecture firm raad studio. The dark floors, beautiful (original I presume) moldings, neutral colour scheme with just enough black, and OMG that kitchen! This is the definition of a considered home. It is fairly simple yet every inch is just as it should be. I was sitting here prepping this post wondering if I could live here. I would LOVE to live here but I can't imagine going thrifting and coming home with something totally random...where would it go?

House in Double Bay

The face it presents to the street is quite stern. Box-like, no adornment, a little severe. The architects call it a "nod to the Victorian character of the street without any of the attendant frou frou." Open the door and the mood changes. Although still minimalist there is a warmth conveyed but the lightest of pastel shades and the extensive use of wood. The small space is enhanced by furniture and fittings that stand on narrow legs allowing longer sight lines while a double height void opens up the room. I'd love to see how this house mellows over time as the new owners put their stamp on the clean contemporary lines. House in Double Bay by Sydney-based architectural studio Tribe.
