As we hit the midweek grind it's time for a virtual getaway. A stylish beach shack with room for family and friends, golden sand and sunshine, even a chance to wind or kite surf ... at Camber Sands Beach in East Sussex, England. Industrial style kitchen, cool scandi style accommodation, secluded courtyard with pizza oven all nestled in the sand dunes 1 minute to the beach. Yes please! A traditional red brick facade hides a contemporary reworking of this 2 bedroom townhouse with a distinct industrial meets New York loft vibe. Think oak floors, Carrara marble, exposed brick and steel framed French doors. I'll definitely take that kitchen and the bathroom has some great inspiration for a very common layout but that back deck needs a rethink. I'm stalking in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran. The kitchen of my dreams. Modern day living in a historic setting with just enough eclectic touches. Oh and my perfect kitchen has its little imperfections like the old worn floor with its wonderful patina. The Frome kitchen by deVOL. Now if I can just achieve the same look in my own home. Swoon.
Strong, resolved and enriching architecture. That is what New Zealand design boutique practice McKinney + Windeatt Architects aims to provide and their project, The Stables is a fine example. From its ivy clad walls to the dramatic profile of floor to ceiling, wall to wall steel and glass windows curtains flapping in the breeze, from the cosy confines of the exposed brick kitchen to the bright sunlight streaming in to the adjoining private terrace, all joined by the consistent march of the connecting staircase the house is part stage, part gallery, all home.
I don't typically use an adjective like 'pretty' to describe a kitchen but it's the first word that came to mind when I saw this space designed by San Francisco and Portland based Caitlin Wilson. Marble subway tile, mostly white cabinets, brass, pastel accents...I can't help it. SO PRETTY!
