It will come as no surprise to regular readers that I have a passion for traditional style kitchens with just a dash of the modern ... the new breed of English country style kitchens in particular. Well today I can say that I have a new kitchen love, a new old-style kitchen love that is and it's not English. No it's the Swedish kitchen design firm Kitchen & Beyond. I thought I'd share a couple of my favourites but you can see more on their website.
Once again I am completely envious of this work environment that could not be more opposite of the one I have been living with for the past 16 years. The folks working for GitHub in SoMa, San Francisco, have it made 10 times over thanks to the designers at Studio Hatch.
At the core of GitHub technology is social collaboration, which was made physically evident in their 55,000 square foot headquarters. The three story office space includes a variety of work environments to accommodate different work styles and flexibility including multiple cafes, a commercial kitchen, full bar, indoor park, dojo and coder caves. As a company founded in local cafes and bars around the city of San Francisco, it was important to infuse these types of environments throughout the space as a nod to the company’s roots.
The beautiful brick and timber space was once the site of a dried fruit packing warehouse in the early 1900’s. Along with GitHub’s own "ship it" mentality, the design honors the rich roots of the space through the use of vintage shipping containers, deconstructed and rebuilt on site as a reference to the train that rolled right through the ground floor.

A couple of days ago Kim feature the time capsule Dennis Severs' house. Today I'm once again in Spitalfields, once again in a weaver's house but this time it's a contemporary yet sympathetic renovation of a Huguenot Townhouse by Chan + Eayrs.
Last week I shared the work of San Francisco based interior designer Jeff Schlarb. You didn't I was going to stop with just one house? Of course not. He calls it Rad Elegance. I call it mid century modern meets restrained glam. Fabulous!
Hallelujah I've found another church to stalk! Long time readers will know that Kim and I love a good church conversion. There is something about the challenge of doing justice to what is the often imposing, original architecture and accommodating the needs of modern living. On the outside today's offering is a sombre red brick edifice from the 1890s. Inside fresh and contemporary open-plan living merges with heavy old church doors and arches. Link here while it lasts.
