Kitchens with open shelving

I love open shelving in kitchens. ALOT. Only thing is the dirt/grime that can collect on your kitchenware. Not a fan of that. Regardless, I think every kitchen should have some open shelving, even if it's just one shelf (this is all I've got) to display some of your favourite dishes or glasses or anything really. Anyone out there not a fan of open shelving in kitchens? (I might convert those folks once they see the photos below).

A new addition to the kitchen

Sorry folks, there will not be a Flickr finds post today. Instead, I thought I'd share with you a major purchase I made about a week ago. A bit of background first...

During the kitchen renovation, I wanted a dining table built because I needed something narrower than an average size table, and it needed to fit 6 people. My boyfriend and I were initially going to build it, but my contractor offered so we took him up on it. The table turned out to be pretty disastrous. The wood of the top ended up warping and splitting, and the pedestal base was completely non-functional for such a long table. In the end, I ended up picking up a couple cheap table legs at Ikea and adding those on, particularly for instances when some of my porkier cats would launch onto it from the countertop. Here is a photo of the table:

I've been looking for a table on and off for several months now and have had no luck, up until a couple Fridays ago when I took my boyfriend down to the Byward Market with me on a table hunt. We were in Stacaro, my new favourite store, when Jeff spotted a really cool desk. It was on sale at 40% off (floor model), and had a black steel base and a wood top, the same colour as my cabinets but a few shades darker. It came with a shelf attached to house a desktop computer, and we quickly discovered it could easily unscrew off. It was the perfect width (just shy of 3') and length. Here is a photo of it from their website:

SOLD! It arrived last Monday and I finally got a chance to try it out with the shelf (decided it was too distracting and hid my Pantons) and find some things for a centrepiece. I love it. I am so happy to have something straight to eat off of, and I am no longer embarassed to have people over for a meal.

There's a few more photos over at my kitchen blog.

A bold and beautiful kitchen reno

I wanted to share an email and some photos with you all from a DTI reader: "I am Dana from Romania, one of your avid readers for some time now, and I have to tell you that desiretoinspire.net helped me with a lot of inspiration for my new apartment :) When I saw your post about Daniel and Helene Gauthier's kitchen in acid green, I was awed by the resemblance with my new kitchen furniture, so I waited to finish it completely, and then I just had to show you how it turned out :). I wanted to use this vivid color in my kitchen for a very long time, but my former kitchen was to small, and I was afraid it will look crowded. Now I have a larger kitchen (I transformed one bedroom into kitchen), so I could play with colors easily! I used white on walls and floor and chairs (Panton), but I needed more color so I added a pink fridge and a pink KitchenAid and some more pink details." What a gorgeous kitchen Dana has created - the pink and green is fabulous together and it looks like such a fun space to hang out and cook in. The random green tile in the backsplash is such a cute touch and she is SOOO lucky to have a pink Smeg fridge! I love it all! To see more of her kitchen and her new apartment check out her blog here and here. (Thank you for sharing with us Dana!)

Bright and bold kitchen

I saw this today on a local paper's website (Ottawa Citizen) and had to share it. How gorgeous is this apple (or acid) green kitchen?!?! It is Daniel and Helene Gauthier's kitchen in their 2 bedroom, 850 sq ft downtown condo. (Perhaps it is so fab because Daniel is senior kitchen designer for Potvin Kitchen & Bath). They are very brave to have such a bold colour used so abundantly in their kitchen. Fantastic!!
