New meets old in Medindie

A historic facade and thoroughly modern out the back. Yes another fabulous old meets new Aussie extension. In the suburb of Medindie in the inner-north of Adelaide, South Australia. By William Burton Leopardi. I think the architects description of how it all came about is great.

“Don’t kill the tree!” A gnarly pepper tree formed the planning challenge of an addition for a young family to their Victorian era home. A pool, small block, desire for light, space and ‘room to grow’ rounded out the brief and reaffirmed the challenge. Space for all, parents and kids, and an enthusiasm to embrace this as the “opportunity of a lifetime” allowed for delightful layering of function, whimsy and contemporary eclectism – oh…..and “don’t want to see the kitchen.”

Non-designery

The owners of this Cremorne, Sydney house wanted their interiors to be lived in, warm, inviting and "non-designery". Their Queen Anne style home was redesigned and extended by Luigi Rosselli architects but they turned to interior designers Decus to weave the magic that saw traditional meet modern, Danish mid century sit with family friendly custom build and everywhere glorious art. Light, bright, modern with a nod and always stylish but never precious. Beautiful, unique, fun.

Modern country

A simple extension to an existing house takes advantage of the views to the surrounding countryside. The feature window in the living area frames the vista while the wood burner sits to the side allowing the occupants to take it all in. Love the use of tongue and groove panelling to add to the country flavour. The rooms are almost Shaker like in their simplicity but there is no doubting that this is modern Australian design. If I'm not curled up in front of the fire and the view I'll be soaking in the tub with the view. The Plinth House by Luke Stanley Architects.

Not what it is, but what it could be

This is Marmalade Manor. Built in Salt Lake City in 1878, this home is caught in a time warp and would be an absolutely incredible renovation project (if the bones are not in too rough of shape that is, or the budget was limitless). There are so many to-die-for original features including SIX fireplaces! I would love this home just for the gorgeous vintage kitchen sink and O'Keefe Merritt range (*drool*). Never mind the fact that there is a butlers pantry, TWO laundry rooms (one up, one down), a steam shower, radiators and in the backyard, a stone two-story playhouse. The house is pretty much bare in terms of furnishings, but have a look through these photos then close your eyes and dream of what it could be.... (for sale via City Home Collective)

On fire

Love this living room by DISC Interiors and it's not just because winter has arrived and I'm fascinated by anything that includes a fireplace. Mid century modern fab.
