Ian MacDonald

I'm feeling a bit patriotic today so I thought I'd feature a Canadian architect I discovered recently. Ian MacDonald's firm is based in Toronto, and he has won a whole bunch of awards for his residential designs including three Governor General's medals and six Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence. WHOA. I am REALLY smitten with the first exterior photo below - those porthole type window pod things are such a cool idea (I see something like that on the top of a tall, narrow house).

Yes, I have a weakness for really well executed interior photography, especially when executed by a Canadian. Vancouverite Martin Tessler has it going on. I love his portfolio, and I am totally intrigued by the walls of trinkets in the first two photos. (Previous post here and some of his photos here)

z axis design is an architecture firm based in Toronto that I recently discovered whose work is impressive. Their kitchens are gorgeous, their cabinetry is divine and I absolutely adore the front entrance that blends seamlessly with the outdoors - SO COOL!

Reader's home - Shirley's not-your-average B&B

We received an email from Shirley who wanted to share her home with us: I am an artist but my husband and I are semi retired and just opened a Bed and Breakfast between Montreal and Ottawa in L'Orignal about 1.5 years ago. We bought a house that was unoccupied for more then 2 years and completely renovated it and I got all my artistic juices going to pretend I am an interior designer LOL ….. But we are both quite happy with the result and so far our guests are very taken by its ambiance too. I love that it's not your traditional granny-decorated B&B - and it's close to Ottawa so book me a room Shirley!

She specializes in portraits (they're amazing) and spaces (amazing too as you'll see). "Everything has its beauty, everything has its secret, everything has its little miracle to reveal.
