Inspiration request

We received an email from someone looking for a bit 'o inspiration: "HELP! I need inspiration. I am redoing a guest room and I want it to have that Indian/Moroccan feel to it with out feeling 'themey'." Not a problem. I went through my stash and found some not overly Indian/Moroccan bedrooms that I think would make beautiful guest rooms. But beware - make it too beautiful and your guests will never leave!

Castle

WINKS returns next week but I couldn't wait to share one email from my inbox. Rachel Castle is the creative force behind Castle, beautiful bedlinen and embroidered artwork. Rachel and her extensive factory (her very patient mum) handcraft these beautiful pieces for the home. Castle loves crisp white cotton bedlinen, with a little bit of handprinted colour for sheets and pillowcases. It's crisp white coverlets with printed buttons tossed with yellow and charcoal, polka dots and flowers and a collection of lovingly handstitched one-off pieces on vintage French linen. It's fresh. It's fun. It's modern meets vintage with lashings of indie. It's so cute!

Bedroom inspiration

Over the holidays we received 2 emails from readers looking for help with bedrooms. The first is from Brehanna: "I'm having a little problem. So I'm a sophomore in college and a couple of my friends and I are going to rent a house for the upcoming school year. Each of us gets our own bedroom. I want to do a classic room with a pop of color somewhere. I love the 40's and 50's. You know the classic actresses such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. I already collect black and white photos and plan on putting those up too. But after that I'm lost...HELP please."

Now that doesn't sound too complicated. But I'm tempted to say go Hollywood Regency, rather than classic. Classic can be a bit...boring dare I say (what is classic, really?). I found a few I'd consider classic (?), some with a bit of Hollywood regency thrown in, and some that display black and white photography to maybe inspire other ideas. I even threw in a couple photos with bold walls (teal, black and coral) that black and white photography would look incredible against - but if your landlord would flip over that you could just paint a rectangle over your bed and put some of the photography there. Whatever you decide Brehanna, you're going to have a blast. It is college after all. (PARTY!!!)

Then there was Trisha's email: "I was wondering if you can help me out. I need to redecorate my room which i will be sharing with my baby (I'm due in May). Any ideas? It's 3.42m x 3.70m."

Now there wasn't a whole lot to go on here, but in any case, I found some photos that might inspire this soon-to-be mom. I'm figuring since the room is small, keeping it white or pale colours would be a good idea so it's calming and soothing. My stash of photos had basically none of bedrooms for both baby and mom so I mixed it up a little bit with some for both. Any of these schemes would work. I love the first 3 photos with the hanging bassinet but there could be feasibility issues with that. Cute nonetheless.

Liz's holiday bedroom makeover

A Flickr contact and fellow Ottawan Liz has been VERY busy over the last couple days. She has completely redone her bedroom and I had to post about it here because she did a fantastic job. I am also completely jealous because all I have done to my pale yellow (barf) bedroom is rip out the closet, leaving a gaping hole in the floor and chunks of drywall missing, and it is really starting to get on my last freaking nerve. Anyway, here is what Liz had to say about her bedroom makeover:

"I can't tell you how much I love our new bedroom decor. Thomas and I have been planning this room since we moved in over a year ago and now that it's done, I can't even imagine how we put up with the bland walls for so long! It took us 2.5 days of painting and building IKEA furniture. We still want to replace the outlet covers but that will have to wait until one of our dads can help us because that involves electrical work. The closet doors in the photos need to also be replaced but we need to save up more dough for that because it's going to be pricey! Also we will eventually do new base moulding and some crown moulding in white. The pictures in the white frames are going to be changed, we just haven't found the right ones yet. We just couldn't pass up the deal we got on the frames so we decided we'd just ditch the ugly pictures inside :)"

I love everything she has done to her bedroom - the colours, the symmetry, the use of white furniture that stands out so beautifully against the walls, the painted headboard....YUMMY! Liz has gotten the decorating part of my brain going (more than usual) and I am so going to get my ass in gear and start planning my bedroom.

Here are some details of her sources: "The paint we used was Aura by Benjamin Moore. The headboard is painted on the wall using a matte and a semi-gloss finish in the same colour (Bittersweet Chocolate). The accent wall blue is Caribbean Blue Water and the rest of the room is Sea Star. White furniture is from IKEA except for the white ottoman which is from Bouclair Home. Accent pieces are mostly from Homesense and Winners."

Random on a Thursday

I am STILL super busy, and after tomorrow my life should be back to it's usual hectic pace. I have a ton of stuff to get done today, and tonight I am going to see my coworker Jack and his wife Shannon (Jupiter Ray Project) perform at the National Arts Centre. I thought I'd give them a plug because their music is awesome and Jack has been on parental leave since March and I miss him. Anyway, while I scarfed down breakfast I went through my sister's photo stash and found some random photos for a Thursday.
