What to do with a dorm room

Grant emailed with a link to a video of Trading Spaces' Genevieve Gorder with tips on how to decorate a dorm room. Since it's back to school time and she's got some really great ideas, I thought this was worthy of an extra Monday post.

Sam's dilemma

Sam emailed us with the following predicament: "I have a dilemma. I just got new curtains for my bedroom whose pattern consists of gold and navy blue. I therefore want to change the design of my room to match (right now I have a green bed frame, white table, lavender carpet... big mess). However, seeing as my bedroom is in the basement and therefore has small dingy windows with limited natural light, I don't want to fill the room up with dark colours to match the curtains. So I was wondering if you would succeed where I have failed in finding inspiring images of bright rooms with touches of gold and navy. It is not a current or popular colour combination, but a pretty one nonetheless, if you ask me. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!" It was a little tough Sam, but here are some photos for you that have some navy and a little bit of gold/yellow (ok, most do), to inspire your bedroom redo.

Break

This is the last day of my 4 day weekend and I've got a ton of stuff to get done around the house. (I almost said that it's finally a nice day out, but then turned around to find dark clouds and sprinkling rain. UGH!!!) So I'm taking a blog break today. I leave you with the following photo from Marie Claire Maison, because I have recently become totally smitten with Moroccan/Indian decor.

Black and white debate

Ashley of the blog Free Form emailed with a bedroom decor problem: "I am moving to a new apartment and thought I should really concentrate on decorating my bedroom. I kind of have my room in black and white right now but I didn't do a great job if it. So I am wondering, do you think I should try and revamp the Black and White theme or scratch it for colours?" She posted on her blog some inspiration she found for black and white and also did one with colour. I say if you've got black and white going on and you like it (except the execution of it) then work with what you have. Since I don't know what Ashley's working with, I went through my photo stash and found photos of predominantly black and white bedrooms. I do like the idea of introducing a colour (pale pink, pale blue, acid yellow...), or even just some timber pieces added in to soften the look.

I think my favourite inspiration would have to be Erin of Design for Mankind's bedroom below. The wall colour tones down the harshness of the black and white and is perfect for a bedroom.

Yvonne's new home

Yvonne wrote us recently to share with us her new home. She moved a few weeks ago and has a limited budget, but I think she's off to a great start. Her home has amazing features like the high ceilings and the original hardwood floors.

Yvonne did have a design question for us: "Even if I like my cream-colored bedroom, I think now and then it could use some color (with pillows or pillowcases, candles, flowers...). I thought of a dark purple, what colors would you suggest?". I love the idea of a dark purple, to add a touch of drama. You can pretty much do anything - a dark colour for drama, a bright colour for some life, a pale colour for some softness. I've found some photos of all white or cream bedrooms that have a touch of colour to help Yvonne decide.
