Melander Architects

I love the work of San Francisco based Melander Architects. Whether modern, regional vernacular, adaptive re-use or historic conservation they believe that their most important skill is their ability to listen. The design process is a dialogue between client and architect.

David Howell

David Howell moved to New York after a successful career in New Zealand. His work is clean, crisp and organic, edited but artistic. The spaces are ultra-stylish and modern but liveable. Ask him how he describes his style and he says, "Opulent urbanity."

David Collins

David Collins takes a holistic approach to his designs. His team comprises architects, interior designers, furniture designers and graphic designers. He balances rationale and aesthetic. And what does that mean? These fabulous luxe rooms that's what. Functional, fabulous, lush. And those blues!!!

Owen and Vokes

Paul Owen and Stuart Vokes are award winning Brisbane architects. They explore the interaction between internal and external space creating outdoor “rooms” that push the boundaries of a home beyond its four walls, playing with the ideas of enclosure and comfort. There is a preference for making plain buildings with humble materials. I’ve included a few of their indoor spaces showcasing the simple, Zen like feel of these family homes. Don’t be fooled though. Space is cunningly carved up to be as useful as possible and economical building materials ensure that these ideas are easily accessible to all.(Don't forget to click on the images to view them larger.)

Luis Pons

Architect Luis Pons' firm, Aponwao Design, is responsible for a wide range of projects that use materials from one end of the spectrum to another. Travertine marble for the East Hampton beach house of Latin singer Chayanne, and bakery carts covered in latex for dividers in a client's apartment. His own apartment is covered almost floor to ceiling in air mattresses and inflatable furniture. The first group of photos below are of Luis' live/work space, the next set are examples of the firm's interior design projects, and the last are objects designed by the firm, including side tables made of metal ball-chains, and 1950s furniture applied with picture frame moldings.
