WINKS

.... on my walls

WINKS - weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we've found and things we think you'll want to see. If you'd like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we'll link you. So what's in this week?

  • Bondville - cool products & design from Australia and elsewhere to keep you in the know. Steph has a great eye for Aussie finds and even better she's from Brisbane too! I'm blown away by the blogging talent coming out of my home town Briz-Vegas!

  • Susie Q from eye spy sent me a link to the work of Alvin Lustig. If you don't know his work you're in for a treat!

  • Love metremade. Love. Liz Roger and Tess McCabe are the creative Aussie duo behind these fab pattern designs. (I used their Take the Tube fabric in green on a lampshade.) These ladies are SO talented. Fabric, desktop wallpapers (download here) and now the most exciting news of all - they have designed patterns for Grippiks, decorative pattern "accents" for IKEA furniture. The pattern pieces are pre-cut to size for popular IKEA furniture items, and you simply peel and stick for a fast and fabulous furniture makeover! Girls, girls, girls I take my hat off to you!

  • Email in from Jamie Ward Furniture. Jamie wrote, "I am interested in producing eco-friendly pieces which fit into a contemporary home as attractive hand made furniture. I take a playful, inventive approach to designing and manufacturing work which is all made from second hand furniture which has been found discarded around Manchester. The lack of value these pieces have in a modern wasteful society I find surprising, the value for me has always been the individuality and character each piece of metal and wood has due to the weathering which rusts, warps and discolours the materials." Clever, inspired, eco-chic and at times hauntingly beautiful (and at others in your face). Great stuff!

  • Tracy Porter is a design whirlwind. On-line store with gorgeous apparel and homewares and now a blog. Is it a marketing event, is it a woman bent on succeeding in business, is it a lifestyle, is it living with style? It's Tracy Porter.

  • Been to Chic Tip yet? It's a daily design blog dedicated to the art of interior design. They feature stores, products, artists, reviews, sales, contests announcements, trends-in-the-make and more. But it's more than just a blog, it’s a community - for designers seeking inspiration, and for amateur design enthusiasts.

  • Alexis the web editor at marthastewart.com emailed to let us know that Martha's radio channel (Sirius 112 and XM 157) is running a Thanksgiving hotline November 24-26. "We have peeps like Martha (of course), Emeril, Isaac Mizrahi, Johnny Iuzzini and Mario Batali answering your Thanksgiving questions!" Details here. We don't do Thanksgiving in Australia but I sure love turkey! Oh and pie, lots of pie!

  • Lastly I'm sure you have all seen the first in a series of video collaborations between Grace at design*sponge and the New York Public Library. They're following 5 artists (Julia Rothman, John Pomp, Mike Perry, Moontree Press and Lorena Barrezueta) as they create collections inspired by the library's collections. It's an amazing idea and I can't wait to go on the journey with them. Get yourself started on this creative trip yourself if you haven't already. All you need to know is here.

WINKS

I'm hanging my roman blinds this afternoon. Vintage Vera fabric from eBay. I must thank Bronwyn for helping me sew these. I could only get so far! The chair is a recent thrift shop find and as you can see I painted it green. What is it with green and me? I can't get enough. OK on with ....

  • Alberto Caramello is a designer in Turin, Italy and he emailed to introduce DOT. The cutest bird feeder cipcip, an egg shaped cutting board ovetto, boat a floating candle holder and goodmorning a fun placemat. Alberto produces his designs in small numbers with the help of the craftsmen in his area, to offer a high-quality collection in
keeping with the best Italian style. CUTE overload!

  • I'm busy losing myself in Spoonflower. What's Spoonflower? It promises to be a revolution in customised fabric printing. An email landed in my inbox and tipped me off to something I have been wanting for ages. Someone to print my own designs on 100% cotton fabric. The site is still in beta so you'll need to join the community but WHOA! the possibilities. My mind is swimming!!! A sample swatch (8″ x 8″) is $5 (great if you need to see and hold it before you commit), a fat quarter (21″ x 18″) (perfect for crafting) and a yard (42" x 36") (or 112cm wide for those metric kids) for $18 (order up to 5 yards). There's a blog too with lots of useful tutorials like how to create a pattern repeat and a slideshow to fill you in on how it works. I'm heading back to find out more!

  • Paul emailed - "I would like to inform you about our UK Print Design Competition open to students and professionals alike. The grand prize winner will be awarded up to 1000 GBP in prizes. The top 100 entries will win a T shirt and have their design displayed on our UK website.

    Contest categories include:
    • Business card
    • Invitation card
    • Christmas card

Students and professionals can submit their designs here."

  • Loving a new site Australian Edge. Focusing exclusively on Australian creativity in all fields it's jammed full of great design. They have a lot of super talented Aussies featured already, including MOZI and Tsk Tsk. I'm totally hooked!!!!

  • Just wanted to add our voice to many in the blogosphere who are welcoming Nikko Moy and her new online store Ashes & Milk. If you haven't been there already go now, it's beautiful and if you have maybe it's time for a revisit to place an order. Good luck Nikko!
... and it's time for me to climb up that ladder and hang those blinds. It's such a hot day here I'm tempted to take a dip in the pool instead. Maybe I'll hang them tomorrow ;)

.... meet the latest member of my family :)

WINKS - weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we've found and things we think you'll want to see. If you'd like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we'll link you. So what's new this week besides my new green Egg Chair?

  • Matteriashop is always on the lookout for fresh charming eco-design and this month is featuring designer Ryan Frank's Strata Range. Ryan Frank new line is built from wood reclaimed from old office furniture and birch ply so each piece has a history before it even begins life as a cool chair or stool. Cool!

  • Merchant No. 4 scared the daylights out of me when they emailed a reminder that it's time to start thinking about Christmas presents. What a beautiful on-line shop with unusual and beautifully crafted gifts. Know someone who has been naughty? How about coal as a gift? Find out more here.

  • Linda Merrill from Chameleon Interiors and ::Surroundings:: emailed in her capacity as one of the contributors on Blogging Top Design with news of an exciting contest. I'll let her explain. "I wanted to let you know that Blogging Top Design is hosting a contest for readers and bloggers. You and your readers are invited to design a room around one of these fantastic crystal chandeliers from Swarovski's Crystal Palace collection - just like the designers did on the show. And, just like the designers - our celebrity judge will be Margaret Russell - Top Design judge and editor-in-chief of Elle Decor! The contest starts immediately and all entries are due by Friday, November 7th." Find out more details here. Thanks Linda!

  • We've winked VisuaLingual before but Maya emailed to let us know that they are having an Etsy sale with savings up to 50%. Love a bargain!

  • Cadee emailed to introduce her new line of eco-solvent wallpaper Kreme. The website is still under construction (Cadee says November 15) but she sent these pics as a teaser. Love them Cadee!!! Bookmark it and check back soon.

  • The proliferation of on-line magazines is so inspiring. I found an email in my inbox about the David Report. "In the new issue of David Report we will bring forward five key design trends, that we believe in one way or another will change the future. We call our 5 key design trends: Cooltural, Rationaissance, Responsibiz, Sensuctive and Breaking Boundaries. What is good design? Who decides what good design is and what types of products, processes and services will we see in the future? Which effects does design have on our lives, on our future society and cultural movements? How may better and more culturally connected design be created?" It's a fascinating read!

  • I have run out of time and there is so much more to share but it will have to wait until next week. It's a busy weekend at Jo's place and I don't even have time to sit in my lovely new chair.

Chop chop not much time to whip up that fabuloso board and snag those gorgeous lamps! (Oooooh there are three prizes and they are all gorgeous!)

  • Sonodesign specialise in the design and production of contemporary products and furniture. The company was created in September 2007 by Grant Baker and Nick Jackson, two young and innovative designers who share a passion for designing unique, yet simple products produced in the UK. I'm loving their profile shades and lamps as well as the house candle holder. Check out their website for more fab designs and where you can get your hands on them.

It's a great selection of home-improvement/decorating articles and how-to videos ... from how to choose eco-savvy furniture to DIY recycled crafts (and a whole lot more). Ecologue's mission is to make it easy for people to incorporate healthy, environmentally-friendly practices into every day life.

  • You would have to be living under a rock to miss this one but I just have to add my voice to the chorus clamoring to get their hands on Domino: The Book of Decorating (Simon & Schuster) by domino magazine editors Deborah Needleman, Sara Ruffin Costello and Dara Caponigro. Tuesday, October 14 marks its debut. The book is a wonderfully colorful room-by-room guide, sharing an array of insider interior design tips, expert shopping strategies and personal design experiences. Find it at bookstores nationwide (in the States) and via amazon.com (for the rest of us). Want a peek inside, click here.

  • Blog alert! New York interior designer Brad Ford (we featured him here and here) has started blogging. Design Therapy is just as stylish and inspiring as Brad's portfolio. It's focused on a more modern sensibility but with a warm soulful slant."

  • IKEA is sponsoring a web based comedy program staring Illeana Douglas? Yep! Emails have been popping into my inbox and I've clicked on over like thousands of others. Easy to Assemble is a scripted comedy which tells the story of Illeana Douglas when she quits her Hollywood career to work at the IKEA in Burbank. Her past is more difficult to leave behind than she thought! Hollywood craziness with all its gossip columnists, agents, managers, stalkers, fans and celebrity friends soon follows Illeana into her new life. Starring Illeana Douglas, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Arnold, Justine Bateman, Jane Lynch, Ed Begley Jr., Craig Bierko, Kevin Pollack and Robert Patrick.
