Layers

Layers of paint and paper, layers of old plaster and rotting wood, layers of living and layers of history. So many layers removed or revealed with a renovation. Layers left to remind and preserve. This renovation of 9 flats in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter by Miralles Tagliabue EMBT explores the history of the building, revealing parts of old frescos, arched ceilings, tiles and beams. Modern living and respect for the past.

Caramel

Like salted caramel. Luscious and rich. Morish. An adult space layered with texture, carefully strewn with objet d'art, the luxe and somewhat foppish countered by the industrial and abstract nature of the artworks. An elegant, masculine home. Vivienda Santiago Castillo by Madrid-based designer Lorenzo Castillo.

A refuge in Spain

I am not done with the virtual vacations, because I hate winter with every ounce of my being. So now I am taking you to Los Corales de Buelna, a municipality in CantabriaSpain. This is the holiday retreat for artist Nikolas Piper and it is the best of everything. Rustic architecture with stone and exposed beams, mostly mid-century decor, and a matching dog. It all works so well together I could spend the entire winter here. EASILY. Via Elle Decor España, photos by Manolo Yllera.

Eclectic on a Sunday

It has been a bit of a crap weekend so far - I am dealing with my second cold/throat infection in a month, and I spent 11 straight hours yesterday finishing up painting my living room (all I have left to do are the alcoves on either side of the back window once husband builds and installs shelves). It looks fantastic and I am really pleased. Photos to come once the room is complete and put back in order. And on a side note of happenings around here, I have a kitten rescue scheduled for Thursday (gawd help me) and a trip to Montreal Friday to pick up some vintage chairs for my dining room (!!!!). Anyway, it's 5 am and before I head back to bed with the cats I leave you with one of the most eclectic homes I have seen in a while. It is located in Barcelona in a building built in 1910, and was formerly a jewelry shop. Now it is home to the owners of an antique shop - which makes complete sense once you see the fabulous interior. It is furnished with such random pieces from different eras yet somehow it all works. (Via Nuevo Estilo)
