You may be able to get away with anything in Malibu, but what this home lacks for in typical Malibu OTT style or modern to the extreme is made up for in retrolicious funk. I would prefer this any day, anywhere. The Archers making spaces deliciously good once again.
Australia's Gold Coast is a tourist glitter strip with showy apartment blocks that grow ever higher and ostentatious McMansions devouring two, three or even more original holiday homes. How refreshing to see a mid century gem returned to its laid back 50's hipster glory with a mix of classic, contemporary and custom designed pieces by Brisbane-based Anju Designs. Built originally in 1973 this Prahran, Melbourne home packs a lot of style on its 155 m² block of land. A 2014 renovation remains true to its 70s vibe but with cleaner, more contemporary lines. I like that the exterior is rather constrained with just a hint of what lies within proclaimed in its garage door. Sometimes real estate stalking makes me jealous, sometimes for the house, sometimes for the contents and sometimes for the art. I'm coveting the dejected Batman in the entrance. It's like I say time and again. If you have to drag your sorry self into work on a Saturday then it certainly helps if it's somewhere stylish. I have two offices today, both by Amsterdam-based interior design and branding agency Tank. Lingotto uses suspended timber dowels as visual dividers while Doom & Dickson (fabulous name) has a definite retro vibe.
It's all about personality. Make a stand and say no to the boring and mundane. Don't be a sheep. Don't follow the crowd. No need to keep up with the Joneses. No. Be yourself and make your home an extension of who you are and what you love. Kensal Rise Factory by London-based Maddus Creative.
