I'm walking the cobbled inner city streets of Melbourne, stalking an angular house by Andrew Maynard. A contemporary home with a warehouse feel from its soaring ceilings, gantry-like walkways to its materials palette of concrete, steel and glass. The thing that strikes you most though is the light streaming in through the cleverly placed windows. Link here while it lasts.
I am completely smitten with this Seattle apartment designed by Brio Interior Design. Such fun bright colours in unique conbinations and a midcentury vibe. The clients of this newly built high rise unit only had a few requests when hiring brio interior design to complete the bare bones, empty interior from scratch. The palette should include green and ivory, the art should be local, the sofa must be “nap-able” and there must be a king size bed in the owner’s suite with an upholstered headboard. We chose to infuse the sterile interior with bold color, lush texture, one of a kind custom furnishings and plenty of velvet. The space features artwork by locals including Deanne Belinoff and Paul Edmondson as well as the fine craftsmanship of local woodworkers and furniture makers who built the custom sofa, wall bed/desk, headboard and living room built-ins right here in lovely Seattle. I'm stalking a 2016 Palm Beach, Sydney house by renowned Australian architect Glenn Murcutt. Conceived of concrete, steel, toughened glass and black zinc cladding, it touches the land gently, perched between sandstone outcrops and Angophora gums. Functional, sustainable living in the trees close to the sea. Link here while it lasts.
I can't think of a sweeter spot to spend the summers and enjoying the beautiful weather in British Columbia. What was once a tired lakeside bungalow filled with peeling wallpaper and shag carpet now stands out in the otherwise rustic neighborhood as a modern eclectic oasis. Situated in the quaint town of Cultus Lake, the cabin was fully renovated and refurbished by the home owners and decorated by the Plaidfox Studio team. Elements such as wallpaper, salvaged wood, and aluminum panels where added to give the home a more casual, yet designed feel. By request of the owners, we added only elements that were unique and heavily curated. Elements such as the vintage photography throughout the home were found in the local archives by the Plaidfox team and printed on aluminum panels - each telling the history of the home and its neighborhood. Working with an existing, unusual floor plan and stunning views, the decor and finishes were added to enhance the lakeside experience rather than just to blend in. Bolder, more fun pieces throughout the cabin help to drive home the relaxed lakeside feel the young family wanted. Unpretentious elements mixed with high design and artful touches is what gives this mid-century, industrial home its modern flair.
Kim and I love a church conversion. We have shared so many over the years. This "conversion" in Melbourne's inner-city suburb of Collingwood is just a little bit different. It's a church juxtaposition, a "house/church symbiosis", a church and courtyard house Siamese twin configuration, a conversion without converting. The real estate listing calls it "Gothic Revival meets Neo-modernist design". Whatever you call it it's bloody brilliant. It's by Kister Architects and is the architects own home. Watch the video for some insight into the design and also for some great overhead shots that really make the geometry come alive.
