Down the long driveway, you'll see it ...

It seems the holidays are over and it's time to get back to work. Nose to the grindstone, bum up. Excuse me while I escape the drudgery of the workaday on day one of my return by slipping between the pages of latest fab book to land on my coffee table. Down the long driveway, you'll see it.

" ... a book of pictures of modernist, mid-century New Zealand homes. The houses aren't new, they’re old and lived in. They can be a little dusty, slightly worn around the edges and all have what antique dealers like to call “patina”. But they’re perfect in the minds of the people who live in them because of what they represent, which when designed, was a better way of living."

Photographer Mary Gaudin, along with writer Matthew Arnold, hasn't so much documented the architectural details of the homes but explored their being through her evocative images. It's about house and site and home and life and aging and fulfilling promise. My copy is dog-eared already. So if you still have some of the money Santa gave you or even as a belated present to yourself then Down the long driveway, you'll see it is a must.

Hiding out in Hotel Hotel

I'm running away from Christmas. Who else is in? And I'm not escaping to a hip, happening must do destination ... or am I? For a long time many of our nations' capitals have got a bad wrap. Dull, boring hubs of government and not much else. Just ask Kim. She lives in Ottawa. Things are changing, at least in Australia's national capital Canberra. How much more hip and happening can the new Hotel Hotel get? So cool it's positively frosty ... that's if it wasn't so hot. Anyone else want to run to Canberra? At least until Christmas is over?

Traditional with an edge

Jo featured a really lovely beachy pad several months back by Georgia-based interior designers Rethink Design Studio and today I bring you some more projects by this super talented team. This is a home for a family of four was once traditional and is now edgy with a mid-century vibe. I love that they took such a classic-detailed home and brought it into this decade. I bet the kids are proud to bring their friends home now! (They should consider a kitchen redo though - bleh).

A refuge in Spain

I am not done with the virtual vacations, because I hate winter with every ounce of my being. So now I am taking you to Los Corales de Buelna, a municipality in CantabriaSpain. This is the holiday retreat for artist Nikolas Piper and it is the best of everything. Rustic architecture with stone and exposed beams, mostly mid-century decor, and a matching dog. It all works so well together I could spend the entire winter here. EASILY. Via Elle Decor España, photos by Manolo Yllera.

A modern bachelor pad

This modern bachelor pad designed by San Francisco interior designer Regan Baker really hits all the right notes. Love the lightest and the touches of orange and blue throughout, and it is not too masculine. The overall color pallet was derived from his uncle’s large scale highway artwork, which is now displayed proudly above the custom sofa. From there we built the design around his love for modern spaces, his personal hobby of photography and his love for music. With the exception of a few great pieces of art, we worked hand in hand with our client to assure his bachelor pad was masculine, yet casual modern and in the end created a bachelor pad Ryan Gosling would be happy to bring his dates back to.
