... not much. OK I'm a little further on. I thought I'd show where we are at the moment. My cheap and cheerful counter top solution is hopefully coming together this week. Plywood will be glued to the existing tops and stained then sealed. Japan black? I'm leaning that way. You can see more of my temporary and dirt cheap kitchen re-do over on my page.
Here is a reader request from Monika: I'm about a year away from a major kitchen/family room remodel and our architect is recommending we have a large island that would stand alone without a sink or stove. The sink and stove will be on the wall opposite the island. I love the idea of a large open space with no sink/stove paraphernalia to clutter it up, but I haven't seen an example of this in real life and would like to see a few examples before I give the go ahead... my mother in particular is skeptical siting the importance of the "work triangle" while I feel a large clutter free expanse creating a sense of calm & cleanliness trumps the triangle. If you find examples of large islands with no sink/stove, I would love to see them. I am absolutely with you Monika. Plus, with the main sink in the island, you'll always have a pile of dishes there. Who wants to see that so clearly?

Today's reader request is from Nat: I was wondering if you could help me find more inspirational images of kitchens. I want to put butcher block counters throughout my kitchen and don't know what type of sink to choose: (1) undermount; or (2) drop in. I don't like the look of drop-ins, but I'm worried that with an undermount sink I run a chance of ruining my counter edges. I've read around blogs that this should not be a problem if you seal them properly. But I'm looking for images to convince hubby that this will be worth the extra work. I haven't had much experience with butcher block (I do LOVE it) but I would guess with a good initial seal and re-sealing as required, you could go with either. I'd had an aversion towards drop-in sinks for a loooong time now but after taking a close look at the photos I found of sinks used with butcher block, I actually think I prefer drop-ins (and those in white ceramic). Perhaps you'll agree after having a look at the following photos...

Stacey sent us in a reader request I wanted to tackle today and while it's quite brief, I found it intriguing: "Hi! I'm not sure if you've done this one, but I'd love to see kitchen fireplaces.....thanks!" Easy enough request, but I immediately began to wonder how many photos I'd find of kitchens with fireplaces. I think it's a bit odd to have a fireplace in a kitchen, which tends to be one of the warmest rooms in the house (if you cook that is). Although the more photos I found in my stash the more I thought how fab it would be to have a fireplace to make a kitchen even cosier. I'm sold!

We received the following email recently from Ewelina: I am a young interior designer from Poland (Europe), taking my first steps in designing. It's not easy in my country to change peoples' mind and attitude as far as interior design is concerned. Many people still don't care how they live, but hopefully it's changing, slowly but still it is. Ewelina sent along photos of 2 of her projects which I'd love to share with our readers. (Check out the second one, my favourite, after the jump).
First set of photos is my latest project of a living room combined with kitchen. It's an old apartment, so it required to be change almost entirely.The only thing that hasn't been changed so much, is the kitchen. Before the renovation the kitchen had olive-green colour, so that the room seemed to be sad and dark. Thanks to the great material that it is made of (oak) I decided to change only the colour, despite it would be much easier and cheaper to make a new kitchen. All the shelves where hand-painted!. It took a lot of work form my carpenter :) The living space has a silk curtains and cushions, and a silver and glass accessories, such as table and the bracket next to the door. One of my favourite thing in this interior is a crystal table lamp, it gives romantic, warm light.
