Green Light District Design

Back one Sunday in August I blogged about a new shop here in Ottawa called Green Light District Design. It's one of my favourite shops that I must stop in whenever I'm visiting the Byward Market. I'm stoked to have GLDD as one of our new sponsors and thought I'd do another little intro to showcase some of their gorgeous wares. The following photos I took on a trip to the shop (sadly I only had my iPhone with me) when I stopped by to pick up some Christmas gifts for my mom...and of course, a couple things for me. ;)

Think unique and timeless, a cool and contemporary simplicity of design that still retains its soul.

They had the most beautiful saddle leather and iron butterfly chair in a stunning red sitting in the window...

You have no idea how badly I covet the chair below. David and Deborah, the owners, took it down from the window and insisted I try it out. BIG MISTAKE. It's like SITTING ON A CLOUD. Or what I would think sitting on a cloud would feel like. :-)

This table, the Loves Me, Loves Me Not 8 petal table, is so cute I can't stand it.

This coat rack almost made it home with me.

I picked up a gorgeous hand-painted table runner and a dinner plate/platter for my mom (haven't had a chance to get a photo of those) and the following vase (I have one from the same artist).

Below is my current dining table centrepiece. I adore the dishes I have collected so far from this shop, and since I don't really have open shelving to show them off, I decided to just stack them on a tray on my table. We use them all the time, and I just love how they don't line up when stacked because each piece is handmade and therefore has subtle differences in shape and pattern (the table runner is from GLDD as well).

After the jump are more incredible pieces of furniture I found around Green Light District Design.

Hello lover!

Is it possible to love a house so much you want to leave your husband and run away to it? If so I may just cheat on Kelvin with furniture designer and maker Mark Tuckey's house. I have loved it ever since I first saw it in Inside Out a number of years ago and now I've stumbled upon it while real estate stalking. Of course Mark and his family have had a number of houses I would gladly leave my husband for and you can why in his press section. A woman cannot be blamed for losing her heart and head over that bathroom. I'm sure I could never afford it so I better stay where I am and just lust after it. Link to the listing here and Mark's website here. I need to lie down. My heart is fluttering!

High Fashion Home

We've got a new sponsor in the house, by the name of High Fashion Home. It's another I could not help but get excited about because they have some reeeeeally hot furniture. I found at least 10 pieces I adore within the first couple minutes on their website. Yeah, it's yummy. They have a huge 125,000 sq ft location in Houston, TX, that looks like a playground for interior design enthusiasts. And you can shop online, and they currently ship only to destinations within the 48 contiguous states, so some of us (like Jo and I) will have to love from afar. They cater to all sorts of styles, as you will see below: Earthy Modern, Industrial Countryside Chic, French Gothic Arboretum, Rustic Zen Ranch, Boutique Hotel, Traditional Glam and Office Vintage Chic. (P.S. They have jumped on the blog bandwagon - check it out here.)

Jackson Street Furniture

Jackson Street Furniture is a new sponsor of ours that we're really excited about because it's MODERN! HIP! CREATIVE! Adam Fizgerald is the genius behind this company. Having trained as an architect and worked on large scale projects for many years, Adam craved working on design at an intimate, human scale. So he began designing furniture....and the kicker? His pieces are reasonably priced! My favourite is the NO PLANE JANE storage unit (first photo below), which would be perfect in the library I hope to have when I do the additions to my house.

Ike Bahadourian

Ike Bahadourian emailed us to share his Met loft remodel with custom furniture (Love his furniture designs! You'll find more on his website.) It's a spartan space but just right to spotlight Ike's beautiful rustic furniture pieces. I'll let him explain.

"The material choices and the layout were guided by the architecture of the space itself. As an open, rectangular loft the existing plan, fixtures and exposed ducts suggested at a linear layout that led your eyes to the balcony, to a view of Staples Center and LA Live. This meant the orientation of the bed, tables and couch would go accordingly. To complement the exposed ducts and pipes, as well as the cement walls, I chose reclaimed wood for the primary pieces of furniture to build with. A ten and a half foot cedar slab against the south wall simplifies the space by combining to serve as both a desk and a tv stand. Next to the table, stacks of the client's recycled wall street journals served as a stand for the dvd player. A reclaimed oak palette was cut in half to serve as a coffee table, with a piece of glass on top and subsequent cubby holes beneath for magazines or books. Six more reclaimed palettes were used to lift as a platform an area, or notch in the wall, that was designated for the bed. This lift separated it as much as possible from the rest of the space and created the only real break in the flow of the small apartment, and a bit of hierarchy. Half circle poplar wall mounts that serve as hangers hung across a Sevak Karabachian wood cut print in the sleeping area. Other pieces included Cb2 biloxi linens, west elm industrial lamps, and a gilbert chair from Ikea."
