Because

Because I love good design. Because it's about people and their homes, their stories and their dreams, when they decide to stay and extend to continue their relationship with a building. Because it's all in the details. Because I want to highlight more of South Australian design firm Williams, Burton, Leopardi. Because.

Modern country

A simple extension to an existing house takes advantage of the views to the surrounding countryside. The feature window in the living area frames the vista while the wood burner sits to the side allowing the occupants to take it all in. Love the use of tongue and groove panelling to add to the country flavour. The rooms are almost Shaker like in their simplicity but there is no doubting that this is modern Australian design. If I'm not curled up in front of the fire and the view I'll be soaking in the tub with the view. The Plinth House by Luke Stanley Architects.

Fringe Architects

Like many of the Australian houses I feature here the Trellis House by West Australian design firm Fringe Architects involves an extension to a late 19th/early 20th century building. These inner city homes are small, often dark and not at all suited to our modern way of life. Their location in desirable inner city suburbs will see owners extend them to embrace more space, the open plan living we all desire these days and an almost culturally ingrained need for Australians to open the indoors to the out. This Perth home sees the marriage of old and new, modern with mid century, polished concrete, exposed brick and a set of pivoting doors that would not be out of place in a Palm Springs mid century pad.

Hartree

A writer's stylish retreat is just one of elegant contemporary spaces created by West Australian Hartree & Associates Architects. The addition to the original 1911 bungalow is light filled, stylish, open plan yet intimate. Be still my beating heart. What I wouldn't give to have such a wonderful office/library/music room.

Dalston House

This is my kind of house - modern mixed with traditional architecture. It is the best of both worlds. By HÛT ArchitectureThe brief was to create a family house that was minimal but not minimalist, with sleek spaces that still had personality. HÛT addressed the brief by creating a home that preserved the character of the existing building and merged this with exciting modern design. The major architectural addition came in the form of two slick black boxes to the rear of the property. These structures enclose a new staircase that leads down to large open-plan basement level, an area that forms the social heart of the property. (Photos: Matt Chisnall)
