Crisp House

The 1850s timber house from had seen better days, its original features long stripped away. "The new addition is concealed using the same form/angle/dimension of the existing cottage, but where that is clad in traditional horizontal timber weatherboards, the new addition is clad in vertical ironbark shiplap. The 2 timber species are further contrasted by their treatment – traditional painted finish for the cottage whereas the ironbark will be left to weather off and soften in appearance. " Inside large sliding walls of glass let in the light and provide easy access to the outside while the materials palette is of plywood, oak, steel, bluestone, brass and cement. Modern living in a strict heritage preservation area. Crisp House in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood by Robert Nichol & Sons.

Light and white kitchen

The redesign and extension of this 1750s building by Reed Watts Architects shifted the focus away from a busy road in front towards the rear, opening a kitchen and dining addition onto a more secluded rear courtyard. Bi-fold doors blur the line between inside and out while light floods in from its southerly aspect. Central to all is the simple and stylish kitchen by deVOL. Beautiful inspiration.

Stalking on a Saturday

A glimpse of a very contemporary addition to the side of the facade is a dead giveaway that this home in Melbourne's Fitzroy North is not what it seems from the street. I'm stalking an Edwardian era red brick home with a industrial modern extension. Love the play of the black steel against the brick and the monumental kitchen island with its rich green tiles and old timber beams. Link here while it lasts.

Stalking 1

A period home with a modern extension ... it's what Australian architects do so well. Oh and seamless indoor outdoor integration of course. I'm stalking a Queens Park, Sydney home with a cozy but funky front (the facade is a dead giveaway that something special lurks within) and a split-level extension featuring a spacious parents' retreat and a huge open-plan kitchen/dining/living zone with sliding glass walls. The design is by Fox Johnston Architects. Link here while it lasts.

High contrast

With its high contrast detail - a black and white palette and interesting play of texture, soft on hard texture, this Melbourne residence involved a renovation and extension to the double fronted Victorian on Winter Street in Malvern for two professionals and their growing family. The furniture includes a mix of designer furniture and lighting, eclectic collected vintage pieces and custom-made items designed by the designers B.E Architecture.
