An air raid shelter turned loft

My dream of living in a loft has never wavered, and the idea of living in a very industrial loft and having the challenge of warming the space up has always been intriguing. This loft isn't necessarily all that warm and cozy, but I really love the dramatic vibe it gives off. It is a former Nazi air raid shelter (complete with WWII bullet holes) erected in 1942 in central Berlin, and is the home of ad agency founder and publisher, Christian Boros, and his wife, Karen. Formerly devoid of natural light, the homeowners had the 3000 sq m bunker completely reconfigured and added massive windows. They have an amazing collection of furniture (and art of course - love the upside down head!), and the dark flooring and concrete walls make it dark and moody but the windows keep it fairly bright. Oh, to have that much space..... (via Freunde von Freunden)

Darkly

Move away from the light my darling. Revel in the shadows. Deep within the bosom of this home, retreat, renew, resist the trauma of the harsh and jarring world. Live your life ... darkly. Startling dark beauty by New York based Sawyer Berson.

The Hedgehog's nest

This dark and moody apartment is in Rio de Janeiro may well be the nest of that spiny creature deep within the earth but no, instead it is the creation of Brazilian architectural firm Ouriço (Portuguese for hedgehog). Outside it may be bright and sunny and tropical but inside it is calm and cocooning with graphic punches and vintage finds. Love the hero wall of books, the industrial lights and the warmth of the wood. Like a den, a club, a nest.

Max Zambelli - darkness

Max Zambelli is an Italian photographer that, with his camera lens, can turn a fantastic space into a FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC space that exudes drama and makes you want to see more. The spaces he has captured are so gorgeous and original that I am in complete awe. What a lucky guy to have experienced them personally. Here are a selection of dark interiors from his repertoire.

P.S. Sorry, no pets on furniture post today. I didn't receive enough entries. :( But go on over to my page and check out my herd's new hangout!

The queen of darkness

I was shocked to discover recently that we have never done a proper post featuring the brilliance that is designer Abigail Ahern. Jo and I have been obsessed with her for years, as her dark, dramatic and vintage approach to decorating is so appealing to us both. I'm sure most of you are familair with her work and these photos, but I had to share because Abigail ROCKS and I feel the need to sing her praises. (To white or to black...that is the question....)
