Seaside simplicity

The renovation and reconfiguration of this house in Mas Nou in Spain's Catalonian region by 05 AM arquitectura was all about opening up the warren of smaller rooms into open-plan living all with access to a stunning sea view through a wall of large windows. Light, bright and spacious with finishes that are perfect for relaxed family living. Seaside simplicity.

More to love from Leanne Ford

I love this limited palette of whites and creams married with the deep warmth of the stained wooden walls. (Great inspiration for those faced with a renovation of retro examples.)  I love the luxury of a thick beni ourain rug against the raw concrete. I love the stone of the kitchen, the handthrown pottery and how the tile runs across the bathroom ceiling. I love the mid century classic pieces and the rough hewn wood. I love it all but then again I have professed my love for everything by L.A. and Pittsburgh-based interior designer Leanne Ford before.

The luxury of lo-fi

"Purposefully lo-fi, The Retreat embraces a low-tech aesthetic towards the operation of the building itself, fully embodying the idea of retreat and slowing down. Celebrating craftsmanship and integrity of materiality instead of technology, every wall of the building have been designed to contain components that manually fold, open and close to manipulate the space and transform the program of the building."

More and more these days I don't need large and ostentatious. I don't need transplanted and often inappropriate design styles. I do need quality and craftsmanship, beauty and a sense of purpose and place. I do need a slow building for slow living. I would love this multi-use private retreat/studio, not as a stylish folly but as my home. (I'd just need a storage shed conveniently out of sight or the willpower to divest myself of the treasure and junk I have accumulated over the years.) The Retreat in Balnarring, Victoria by Branch Studio Architects.

Green Apartment

Different shades of green and blue are the heroes of the redesign of this 30th floor apartment in Kiev by Oleksii Venediktov and his design firm Special Project Venediktov. Bold, unique, a little Scandinavian with an undercurrent of industrial. I love how the colours change as the light advances and wanes changing the feel of the apartment.

Tropical beach pad

This fabulous, fun house in North Bondi, Sydney puts a tropical tiki spin on a contemporary home. Surfboards and tribal carvings, ikat, tapa and batik fabric, a touch of vintage and that lush courtyard just outside the slide away doors. The perfect spot for a weekend getaway in Sydney and close to the famous Bondi Beach, it's another of the unique and super stylish holiday stays from Contemporary Hotels.
