Perforated

Internal courtyards and screens allow this home to be open and light filled without sacrificing privacy. Concrete grounds the open plan building providing solidity while walls of glass, slats and perforations allow light to penetrate throughout. Plantings soften and mellow, golden timbers warm. A contemporary family home by Melbourne-based Schulberg Demkiw Architects.

Still stalking

I'm stalking an architect designed home clinging to the hillside in the Sydney suburb of Bronte. The Marsh Cashman Koolloos design uses a raw palette of off form concrete, form ply, plate steel and raw recycled hardwood with a play between sinuous curves and solid blocks. Light pours in through clerestory windows making the roof appear to float above the concrete walls. Modern living on a narrow sloping block and only minutes to the beach. Real estate link here while it lasts and link to the house on the architects' site here.

A monochrome family home in Israel

A limited colour and material palette certainly doesn't restrict the style of this family home in Israel. Whites, greys and black play against bleached wood, concrete and interestingly a statement bamboo staircase. Love the double height public areas with light pouring in and the patio extending to the pool area. A beautiful home for four by Kfar Vitkin, Israel based Neuman Hayner Architects.

The Bunker

If a concrete home leaves us cold we'll often describe it disparagingly as a bunker. So what happens when that concrete home is actually a bunker? If it's this penthouse apartment atop a WWII above ground bunker in Hamburg, Germany what could have been sterile and oppressive is instead raw, warm and sophisticated. The loft-style space has four metre floor-to-ceiling windows, is filled with contemporary designer pieces and has two big balconies offering amazing views over the city. What makes this beautiful apartment even more exciting is that it is part of the luxury vacation accommodation offered through Welcome Beyond. It's available from March 2017. In the meantime we can daydream of a getaway to help us through the Friday grind.

Soft loft by Lucyna Kołodziejska

I have featured MANY interior design projects by Polish designer Lucyna Kołodziejska over the years but this one is hands down my favourite. This "soft loft" is located in Gdynia on the Polish coast. Home to a couple and their toddler, they wanted the look of a New York loft so concrete and bricks were exposed, vintage radiators and new flooring with a rustic look helped with the loft vibe, along with some vintage furnishings to outfit the space. The homeowners even got creative and made the sink cabinet in one of the bathrooms. I adore the accents of green (yay plants!) throughout, and with black/white/grey the colour scheme is spot on. A++++
