Stacy Bass - Gardens at First Light

Books are something I constantly crave. I especially love books that have me dreaming of climates much unlike those here in Ottawa right now. I am SO OVER WINTER and counting down the days to my trip south, so this book could not have come into my possession at a better time. Gardens at First Light by talented photographer Stacy Bass (with words by Judy Ostrow and published by athome Books) is a beautiful coffee table worthy book that gives you a glimpse into some of the most stunning private gardens you will ever see. Stacy is an extraordinary nature photographer (among other genres as you will see tomorrow) who uses early morning light in such striking ways to create enchanting scenic photos. I could go on and on with more adjectives, but I will let this small sample of photos from the book show you - but I bet you'll start getting that gardening itch before the end of the post! I would give anything to have a statement staircase in my home. Something with the wow factor. I'm thinking that the owners of this Point Piper, Sydney home might just be a little greedy. They have two! And a view to die for! And two floors of books! Their dreams made true by Pearse Architects.

A Brooklyn artist loft

As much as I love that townhouse from my previous post, I will always and forever dream about living in a loft. This Brooklyn loft blows me away with its outdoor space, stunning kitchen and jaw-dropping book shelves. Again by BWArchitects. This dramatic conversion of a light manufacturing warehouse to an artist live/work loft studio juxtaposes the gritty, industrial character of the building exterior with warm, expansive interior spaces flooded by natural light. A retractable translucent wall divides the living and working areas. When closed, its translucency directs filtered light from the linear skylight and northern exposure rear facade towards the library and studio areas. A large sloped skylight acts as a space definer between the live and work areas and a white steel and glass staircase connects the lower level with sleeping rooms and a large roof deck occupying the floor above.
