Reader request - black kitchens

Today's reader request comes from Beverly: I am considering painting my kitchen cabinets black, at least the lowers. Most likely will do the uppers, which are doorless, in white to keep the room from being too dark. There is no natural light. Do you have any inspirations? I sure do!! I LOVE kitchens with black, whether it be just an island, or a wall, or cabinets. Now without natural light maybe painting the uppers white is a good idea but if you have a reasonable amount of wall space and you paint that white, then you likely could get away with painting all the cabinets black. Plus whatever you are displaying in the door-less uppers will show so nicely against the black. I couldn't find many photos with black lowers and white uppers but you'll see in many of these photos that white uppers maybe aren't necessary.

There are a lot of good pictures up there. I have always liked a dark wood in the kitchen but black is classic and will always look good too! The first one is one of my favorites!

My mom wants to paint her kitchen cabinets white (they are currently a terrible medium oak color), but she has black appliances. What is your take on the white cabinets, black appliance look?

my last home had a kitchen with builder grade chintzy oak cabinets. i replaced the uppers with white cabinets with glass fronts on some of them, and painted the existing lower cabinets black. then put on nickel pulls and knobs. it was a simple fix with really big impact. i loved the results. this time i got a little more brave and removed half the uppers, installed industrial open shelving, and had the the rest of the cabinets freshened up with new shaker style doors and drawer fronts, including the all the lowers, and sprayed with a wonderful gray lacquer, in dolphin by behr. i say go for the two tone. it's interesting and with less light, keeps things bright.

I've seen once an amazing kitchen - black with medium-light wood. It looked very Scandianvian besides it was an Australian - Daylesford home of a graphic designer Jessie Fairweather.
Since that time I was dreaming about this house. Can you please show it?

Black kitchens are great. So rich and classic. Plus practical for young families. Have you seen House Beautiful's 2011 Kitchen of Year? It's also black...http://www.housebeautiful.com/kitchens/dream/kitchen-of-the-year-tour-tyler-florence-2011#fbIndex1

I love all of these images as I think black is an amazing color for any room. I wish people weren't so afraid of it. My favorite image is the first one of the herringbone tiles - what a great look!
I have posted a couple of times about black rooms - check it out... http://featherednestny.blogspot.com/2011/03/black-revisited.html

We currently have a galley style kitchen and to break things up we went black one side to the roof and white on the other side. Kinda like the Lagerlings kitchen but with matching Carrera marble benchtops and splashback (I think you northern types call them backsplashes? hehe). It looks really effective and I would definately consider doing it again in another reno.

I have a weakness for white kitchens, but I must say that a black kitchen looks sleek and sophisticated too! Love all these photos!

This is the first time I have seen a kitchen done with the upper and lowers in a different colour! I think it looks so modern, I love it! Having the black on the bottom really blends in the dishwasher, either in black or stainless steal. It just looks great overall, thanks for the post. I am for sure going to suggest this a friend who is looking to renovate their kitchen!
