Reader request - bookshelves
Thu, 15 Apr 2010Sigrid from Norway emailed with a reader request that I thought I'd tackle today, because it's an easy one. :) "I love library and rooms and walls full with bookshelves. I would be honoured if you could post some pictures of rooms and walls full with bookshelves." I would give anything to have a library, a room filled with floor to ceiling bookcases to fill with my ever-growing collection of shelter mags and books. I love to see how people cope with their own book and mag collections. Here are some rooms where large collections are easily stored away.

Ooh, these are all amazing! How sweet of you to grant your reader's wish and request. Kudos to you for your hard work. My faves are Kingston's and Grant White's and Living Etc are just oozing femineness, if that is even a word, he he. Makes me wish that I hadn't gotten rid my most of my books and magazines.
I adore bookshelves full of books. Every time I look as home design images I am always drawn to the ones that have open and large shelving. Thank you for featuring so many great ideas.

Those rooms are amazing. books warm up even the coldest of spaces. i love the dark book cases in the last picture. with the light streaming in through the window and that amazing lucite chair! Perfect pairing.

A gorgeous collection! I always have more books than shelves but far too little space to do anything about it. One day, once my apartment-renting days are behind me, it's going to be floor to ceiling bookcases everywhere! Or at least in the library...

A dedicated library with floor-to-ceiling book shelves and a reading nook by a window is one of my decorating dreams. Closely followed by a walk-in wardrobe/dressing room! Sigh. It's just not possible in my little flat...
Katie - I hear ya! (Sorry to those who like it but I arranged my books by colour when I was fifteen so this trend reminds me of that. It's also harder to find what you want when they aren't ordered by subject)

i admire the book-wall style in living rooms. but what makes the scene more marvellous is a reading couch and a coffee table.. so it makes it livabe.. i don't like using books as a decorative staff . they're for reding and a good reader wants to enjoy every moment of reading it... (sorry abut my english.. i'm not a native so i may have loots of mistakes=)) )
Well consider this: I do an awful lot of my reading on line, yet I have a fair collection of books. I tend to do research and discovery on line a lot, but there is nothing like a solid book and a comfortable chair. So yes, bookcases are still needed, and these are both attractive and functional. To MSD: arranging your books by color is less functional unless your purposes is to browse at random AND have a nice color harmony. Perhaps I will try that.

Damn, I only have one bookcase and too many books, so I have to use two rows for each shelf. Sometimes I find books in the back rows I didn't know I had.

Love this! Especially inspiring are those that show the shelves built around doors. My husband and I want to build bookshelves in our living room, with a 'hidden' door leading into our bedroom. It will be a glorious day when we can unpack all of the books in our garage.

Those images above are the exact reasons why I must stay away from purchasing a Kindle. What a cold place it would be without books. That hint of mystery and secret knowledge hidden away on the shelfs.
Wow!!! Never seen anything like these before in my entire life. But the books really bring life into the rooms; it's really awesome and i love it.
I bought a house that had a formal living room - old fashioned and not really used - and I had floor to ceiling bookshelves built and now have a "library." But it's amazing how fast you can fill it up!!!
