Kim's temporary bathroom redo

I mentionned here on DTI a while ago that I was working on another home project but I didn't give away too many details. I FINALLY finished and now it's time to share.

I had grown VERY tired of the ugliness of my main bathroom. One day I hope to gut the space and completely redo every piece of it but in the meantime the ugliness was getting on my last nerve. And I needed a project because I just wasn't busy enough. (HA). So here are a couple photos of the bathroom before I tackled it - and this is how it had been since I bought the home more than two years ago.

Trust me, it was even worse in person. The linoleum floor was scratched to sh*t, and so dirty and stained it was impossible to clean. The main light fixture, medicine cabinet, towel bar, light switch plate, outlet plate, toilet paper holder were ALL made of nasty wood. SO GROSS. I'm pretty sure the cabinet over the toilet was hung upside down. The faucet was probably the cheapest one you could buy and was missing a piece on the front to cover the screw. The walls were white and BORING. There's a small window to the left of the toilet that had bright green plastic blinds hanging. There's a second light fixture on the wall opposite the sink that had a nasty 80s vibe. The whole space was just awful. Until I can gut the room, I decided to do a cheap makeover. Some leftover paint, new inexpensive faucet and lighting, addition of a chair rail, cheap lino peel and stick tiles, some items brought in from other spaces around my house to decorate and VOILA, a temporary fix to keep me from losing my mind.

Many more photos to follow.....

It's gorgeous! Temporary? Good to go for quite a while! I love it! We recently did a temp bath makeover too and I painted the floors to get me by and ended up loving it. Yours is stunning! Great job!

The light fixture over the sink was from Home Depot ($70) and the one on the opposite side was about $25 and was from either Home Depot or Lowes.

The hooks I bought back in November on my first trip to an Anthropologie store (in Vegas).

Thanks for all the sweet comments!!

Who needs to gut a bathroom when you can do THIS? Holy chic, batman!

But I gotta say I loved the old shower curtain with the big tree on it! That is so "me"!

You slay me! Good grief, whatta shock that was to scroll down and see such a great re-do... wow. The last place I lived, I put down deep black slate tile and painted the walls black half way up...and I was really happy with it! But it was a 100% interior bathroom, in other words, no windows. Thanks for sharing, Kim!

most funkalicious. especially those black and white striped hooks - very bonkers barmy (in a good way). They remind me, for some reason, of Dr Seuss.

Awesome job, Kim! The black wall color rocks, the chair is to die for, the fabric is beautiful and the way you photographed everything is stunning!

Wow. If that is your temporary fix, I can't wait to see the permanent one. We have a similar bathroom with lots of nasty wood and dodgy tiling. I'm inspired to do a temporary makeover after seeing this. Thanks.

i love what u did. im not a big fan of the shabby chic cabinet but the room looks elegant.

aren't linoleum kinda hazardous in bathrooms? u know, slippery when wet?

Wow! Black & white is always so dramatic, yet fresh & clean! An amazing transformation!!! I'm also in the midst of a "non-gut" bathroom reno & I live in Ottawa, so I appreciate seeing yours & knowing where you scooped your finds!:)) Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks everybody!

I didn't even pay for the paint - well, I did at one point. It was all leftovers (the black was kinda gooey it was so old). :)

As for the cabinet, I like a little rough vintage item here and there. And it was free - my sister's and she had given it to my mom who hadn't done anything with it so I claimed it. Can't beat free. And tiles are a tad slippery - more so when you're wearing socks than when your feet are wet.

Absolutely amazing! Love the black and white with hints of yellow pop for colour! Well done!

I am speechless! The before picture had me thinking... how can she improve this without getting everything out first. The transformation is amazing and I'm starting to think I should get working on my own bathroom! The best part is the budget! Wow! Great inspiration!

I love the sharing between you and Jo and your care parcels for each other. Such an inspired use of fabric. Congratulations. Five star lifestyle on backpacker budget.

PLEEEEEEEEEEASE let us know how you painted those linoleum floors! You must have read my mind - I was thinking about painting ours in our new house just this week and then BAM I see your post!! I'm totally doing it!

14 Apr 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBryn

I did not paint the lino. I just affixed peel and stick lino tiles on top of the existing floor. Easier than paint I'd say (not even sure how that would hold up) and the box of tiles was only $35.

Those black and white stripy coat rack hooks are gorgeous - what would you call them? They look like they're off an old train or something!
