cool and tiny student digs
Thu, 9 Jan 2014 3 Comments A big thanks to Debora for sending me a link to this very cool student housing unit build by Swedish architecture firm Tengbom. To meet the needs of students in a sustainable, smart and affordable way was the key questions when Tengbom in collaboration with students at the University of Lund was designing this student unit of 10 square meters. In 2014, 22 units will be built and ready for students to move into. The area in each unit is reduced from current requirement, 25 square meters to 10 square meters through legal consent. This truly compact-living flat still offers a comfortable sleeping-loft, kitchen, bathroom and a small garden with a patio. Through an efficient layout and the use of cross laminated wood as a construction material the rent is reduced by 50 % and the ecological impact and carbon footprints is also significantly reduced. I think this is such a great idea. I could see rows of these cute little houses instead of dorms, which often look like prisons (and provide the same amount of privacy). Do you know anything about plywood? I am wondering how toxic the home is, since I'm such a horrible allergy sufferer. Is it dusty? And what about precipitation? Is the home treated to avoid damage? If so, are toxic chemicals used? Hmm. Maybe I need to do some research. I'm really interested in the tiny home movement.
P.S. Helps to read the post before commenting. I see the wood is laminated. Not sure if that means toxic. Need to do some research. I love your idea about using it as an office. Would also make a great studio! I love that it has a lot of windows!
All I can say is WOW!!! I love this design and its amazing. It just shows we don't need to live in large spaces.
