Cat drama

So last weekend I noticed Milo had a goopy eye. When I went over to clean it and check it out to my horror he had a large abscess on his cheek under that eye. It was gross, and soon burst and was leaking all over the place. Monday we took him in to the vets. Turns out he had alot of tarter buildup on his teeth and they recommended cleaning his teeth and pulling 2 molars. At a cost of $1100. I nearly shit. Anyhoo, this happened Thursday morning. And it turns out after the knocked him out and were able to get xrays they figured out he'd need 4 teeth pulled - so $1200. (And he's got something going on with his jaw which likely means more teeth pulling in the future). So the poor little pooper has essentially no teeth on the right side. And because of the extractions I had to remove the always-present bowl of dry food from the kitchen because he can't eat it until he heals. Which means about every hour someone howls their face off in my direction in the hopes I will feed them something. AH MAH GAWD I'm gonna SNAP. Thank gawd I love all these guys to pieces.

he`s lucky he`s cute! LOL! poor buddy!
I feel so sorry for you and your kitty but about laughed my butt off about the food situation. I bet your brood is going crazy without the ever present bowl of food. Yes, thank gawd you love them:)
I hope little Milo is feeling better. We've spent ooddles of $$ on our two kitties over the years, so I know that shock of seeing the vet bill. Unfortunately we just recently had to bid farewell to our sweet boy Max. Hug Milo & all your other cats tight!
Kim, I have "Gullah" an orange tomcat who has an unfortunate bladder problem and my house is on the market. I feel your pain.
Oh, dear. We seem to be having corresponding feline dental troubles. Sheleg had a few teeth pulled while we were living in Munich, lost a lower molar spontaneously at some point (I found it while sweeping the floor) and just this past week broke the other lower molar and had three more teeth pulled when we took her to the vet to deal with the broken tooth (which was still attached). Amazingly, with practically no lower teeth left, she's been eating like a horse since then and went back to the dry food pretty quickly. My conclusions are thus: cats are much more resilient than we give them credit for, and I'm glad I'm not raising my cats in Canada, because the two dental surgeries she's had to date cost less than $300 CDN all together.
Hope Milo is soon on the mend!
Thank you all for your kind thoughts!
Cheryl, sorry about your cat. :(
Deedy - EEEKKKK!!!!
rappy - thank you for making me feel so much better. LOL. Vets here in Ottawa are complete rip-offs. I once took a kitten of mine to an animal hospital on a Sunday only to find out the Monday afternoon that he had FIP and it was suggested he be put down, which we did. The bill was about $2200....for some freaking tests, giving him the lethal injection and cremation. I vowed NEVER AGAIN to take one of my pets to the vets on off hours. And I will not take the cats to the vet unless they are suffering in some way, shape or form.
Well, I do take them in for their shots, but even that is always accompanied by trauma (mostly for me, actually). We debated whether to take her to the vet during emergency hours for the broken tooth but she didn't seem to be in a great deal of discomfort and was eating wet food without too much difficulty, so we waited for Monday. I've now owned a pet in three countries and am shocked about how costly it is in Canada. Do you think it's just an Ottawa thing?
Do you have pet insurance? I know it's available in Canada but don't know the costs or the deductible...
I think it's more a big city issue. My husband told his mom about Milo who told her sister who is a vet in Prince Edward Island and she said something about that being 2 or 3 times more than it would cost there.
No, I don't have pet insurance. I think that would cost way more than the occassional pet visit considering how many cats I have. I may start looking into having a vet visit the house and check them all at the same time. Would be WAY cheaper considering they charge $60 just for you to walk in the door, PER PET.
Vets in ottawa are a total rip off, I agree! I have insurance on my kittens because it was getting so expensive with their health issues
I am so sorry to hear about poor Milo's troubles, but I am completely shocked with the costs. Unbelievable! I was going to suggest pet insurance too but I saw your answer to rappy. :-(
