Oh my...

I had some time to kill while I waited for a ride home from work so I stopped in at my favourite taunt-my-wallet shop Holt Renfrew. I usually head right to the shoe section (nothing too exciting there right now except for a super soft and gorgeous pair of Modern Vintage booties and they still have Marc Jacobs studded mouse flats), but this time I went for the handbag section first. AH MAH GAWD. Hellooooooo Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors (drooled over this one), Kate Spade (drooled over this one and this one...), Prada....and yes, my beloved Balenciaga. This time there was a salesperson unpacking some boxes and she asked me how I was doing. I took the opportunity to ask her to see the black Balenciaga City bag on the shelf behind her.

*SIGH* This was the first time I had ever touched one of these bags. It was heavenly. I had a short conversation with the her about my love for this bag, and I asked the price (although I already knew roughly). UGH. WHY for the love of gawd do I have to have such expensive taste?!?! She told me to work hard and maybe one day I can own one (note this was after I told her that I was trying to justify getting one, and was attempting to convince my family to ALL pitch in and get me one for Christmas). I thought to myself, I have 2 jobs....I work my ass off....I have the money....but OH WAIT, what were the hubby and I doing last night? Designing a house we want to have built that will cost us every cent we have and MUCH more? I let out yet another big sigh, and let her put the bag back on the shelf. Heartbreaking moment. But it did save me from the heart attack I may have had for spending so much money on a freaking purse. That purse above my friends, is a mortgage payment.

ah my friend, I so understand. 4 years ago we built our dream home. We have had to cut back on a lot of little luxuries since then and somedays I feel frustrated and wish (for a nano second) I had married rich! I still have dreams of Eames chairs and cool hip clothes but when I stop and think about what I want, what I really really want in life, I think of our home and how cool and helpful my awesome husband has been with me for the past 4 years while I redecorate and repaint every few months until things look good. Plus he agrees with most of my crazy decorating ideas.
You work hard and you deserve to treat yourself. If you love this bag, I say get it...on the condition that you will not buy anymore shoes for a little while.
Live rich, die broke. That is my way of thinking.

I'm with you there Melz. I think deep down I'd rather have a cool house than some shoes/bags.

My problem is I worry about spending money on shoes/bags etc. now because when the house stuff comes along and the only faucet I can find that I like is $1500, I don't want to be kicking myself for having spent $1500 on a freaking Balenciaga bag.
But I did just find out today that I am starting back in full time french training on Monday. And my test will be the week before christmas. (See, my head is beginning to hurt just thinking about the excruciating pain of another month of this)
Soooo.....I'm thinking that I deserve a new bag. Maybe not a ridiculously expensive one....

I hear/read your pain. I've lusted after Balenciaga bags for years, but can't realistically justify such a purchase, not when that price tag is equivalent to a full paycheck. Have you tried upscale thrift shops in your area? We have one near where I live that all the women from the extremely wealthy part of town donate items to. I was lucky and got a very gently used Miu Miu large leather bag there for $115 about two years ago (would have retailed at about $900 new). They also had many other designer pieces at more reasonable prices. It's one option aside from E-Bay, where you have to be really careful because so many "designer" things are fakes.

Love reading the blog, look forward to new entries -

$115?!?!?! LUCKY YOU!!! I don't know of any upscale thrift shops here in Ottawa, unfortunately otherwise I'd be all over that. I'd rather have a gently used Balenciaga than none at all.
