New with old

The renovation and extension of this Beverley Hills home included the incorporation of elements from a dismantled 19th century wood barn as well as a new entrance and landscaping. The old beams and siding add warmth to the expansive rooms. I love the marriage of the new build with the old barn wood, the mid century feel of the furnishings working back against the aged timbers and white walls and the beautiful dry climate garden. In-Between Room

"Additions reflect upon the lives of both the inhabitants and the houses themselves. The in-between room is a small, celebrated addition at the rear of an existing Queenslander, one which binds and redefines an existing detached two level tower and claims the interstitial space as its own.

This new room is designed as a counterpoint to the interiors present in the original house. An 'exploded space' which recognises the external walls of both house and tower as its positive edges and treats the remaining elevations as transparencies. A threshold territory engaged with the landscape, accessing the long distant views. The internal belly of the folded plywood ceiling follows the geometry of the frame, drawing the eyes up in an unobserved chapel effect. The grounded concrete slab alludes to the notion of an external courtyard, indeed the in-between room has been designed as an ambiguous space considered more natural when opened than closed."

Exciting new Australian architecture that explores the sense of place and space as well as the interaction between occupants and building. In-Between Room by Brisbane-based Phorm architecture + design.

Latest work by Katie Lydon

This home designed by Katie Lydon is soooo pretty! I mentioned in this post that her style is about bridging the gap between classic and modern and that is evident in this project as well. She took spaces with the most gorgeous rustic wood floors (I'm seriously dying over these) and architectural details that lean towards country cottage and added unexpected contemporary/modern touches that add some excitement.

Contemporary Barn

Close your eyes. That's right. Close your eyes. Imagine a barn, a big, grey barn with huge doors that silde open to reveal views of lush green woods. Imagine the space divided into rooms intimate or vast. Now furnish those rooms with simple pieces, simple, beautiful, tactile things. Think of aged timbers and white wash, stone and linens, old but new. Open your eyes. Did your dream barn look like this one? Mine did. Contemporary Barn by  D. Stanley Dixon Architect.
