Oh the drama! High contrast less-is-more palette, soaring ceilings, walls of flowing fabrics, rich metals and dark woods yet this new luxury is about carefully curated opulence. With a spiral staircase wraps its way upwards like a snake coiling languidly this NYC apartment is seriously sexy. Let's add a third "S" - subtle. The luxury level is high and there are certainly touches of bling but it's pared back, restrained. I love this look. I'm not quite sure what to call it though. It's a definite reference to the 80s in its materials and shapes with a watered down colour palette of that decade's greys and pinks. Like the 80s with a really good IG filter. Then there are hints of Art Deco and mid century. Definitely my new design style crush by Michelle Gerson Interiors.

A sad and sorry 1960s mid-terrace building in Finsbury Park, London has had new life breathed into it by architectural studio Archmongers. By knocking through the internal walls and creating a glass and timber extension the ground floor layout is more connected and so much brighter. I love the use of glass bricks, terrazzo, tiles, rubber and plywood, even the quirky "brain-coloured" tile and clock on the facade. Tired and dated is now energetic and creative.
After surviving a record breaking heatwave in my part of the world I find myself dreaming of getaways that involve water, lots of water. Backwater "sits on a small promontory in a secluded lagoon in the Norfolk Broads and offers a contemporary counterpoint to more traditionally designed neighbouring houses, while respecting the peaceful natural setting." Off the grid and may I say off the scale style-wise. I just want to lie staring at the ripples in the water as gentle breezes waft over me ... and I can because Backwater, designed by London-based Platform 5 Architects, is a holiday let. Bliss.
