kitHAUS

I have a thing for modular housing. Pavilions, kits, pods. Love 'em. Small spaces that alone or in combination allow you to configure your dream layout in confined spaces or the big wide yonder. Small footprints. Small impact. Small spaces just right for big ideas. This cutie is from kitHAUS and if you click over to their site you can enter their competition to hatch your next big idea staying in this kitHAUS at Arroyo Grande, CA. Look at that view!

A tiny grand design

It's a tiny house with Grand Designs. This itsy bitsy 5 level Surrey Hill's house is the creation of Woods Baggot principal Domenic Alvaro. Domenic and his partner Sue Bassett could not afford the price tag of a house in this trendy inner Sydney suburb. What they could afford was a carpark. So this is what they did. Bought a 3 car space and built up and up and up. Featured on Australia's LifeStyle Channel as part of their Grand Designs series you'll find so much more on their website. Befores, afters and video walk throughs as well as more clever Aussie homes. Clever design solution! Stunning views! To die for roof top garden! The steps would keep you fit!

World's smallest bathroom

Here is an email we received from a reader named Mari: "I have the world's smallest bathroom. I tried a couple of things, but nothing's seem to work in it. The worst thing it's not its small size, but how the things are put together. I even had an architect to take a look, but there was no way to change the things out of their original place. The bathroom is 83cm x 2.40m. The shower is 80x80cm. I was wondering if you can get me some ideas." I honestly don't know what to say about this because it really is T. I. N. Y. My advice is blow out a wall but I'm guessing that ain't gonna happen. An architect friend of Mari's said that it would be possible to blow out the wall on the left, but when it was time to do it, it was discovered that that was some kind of building regulation against it. So if you guys have any ideas for Mari, fire away! (P.S. I did a "small bathroom" reader request a couple months back but I'm not sure that post would even help in this case).

Reader request - built-in home office

It's reader request time, and today's post comes from Melissa: "I've stalked your blog for years, and now that my husband and I are in the throes of renovating a funky garage/apartment into our future house, I was hoping you might be able to help. The home is 1600 sq. ft, so every sq. ft is in contention. I am a writer/photographer and need to have a home office that, unfortunately, will be placed just off of our living area. I was hoping you might be able to point out some built in home offices or some unusual alternatives to computer/bookshelf storage?" I scoured my workspace photos and found some that are small/built-in/in or nearby living rooms. Hope this helps you Melissa and anyone else looking to carve out a home office out of a small area.

Slacking off

I am trying to get some posts done to publish at the end of the week while I'm still on holidays, so I thought I'd slack off a bit and just use this post to showcase more photos from one of my favourite websites (particularly for small space solutions) Du côté de chez vous.
