Barbara Saskia

Barbara Saskia is an interior designer based in New York City with a slightly quirky sense of style - and personality. You don't hear this much, but Barbara uses astrology as a design tool. Allrighty. Well, whatever the heck she uses, it works. I really like her sometimes bohemian, sometimes modern, but always casual approach to design.

Reader's home - a tiny Swedish apartment

Karin, a devoted DTI reader from Umeå, Sweden, is selling her apartment and sent us a link to the real estate listing. It is a tiny studio that has been completely renovated. It's adorable, and perfect for someone without a lot of stuff - which is SO not me. Although how fun would it be to have a little pied-à-terre in Sweden! I love the little alcove bedroom with handy open clothes storage.

Stalking little cottages in the city

The beginning of the week saw me stalking small country cottages. Today I'm wandering the streets of inner city Melbourne. Two worker's cottages caught me eye. The first is in South Yarra, Melbourne. (Link here.) The second in Fitzroy, Melbourne. (Link here.) Two homes small in footprint but big on style. When you are surrounded by all the temptations of inner city living a home is more of a base for exploring and experiencing what is on offer around you than a mega McMansion in the 'burbs where the house itself is more the destination. (Dare I say to almost theme park dimensions in some cases ... then again I always was an inner city girl ;)

A bit of colour goes a long way

I have been on a neutral kick lately but I do appreciate when designs incorporate a bit of rustic with splashes of colour. This 97 m² apartment in the south of São Paulo, Brazil blends both beautifully. (Via Casa.com.br)

Open and close

Innovative use of space, fluid, adaptive. It's open and shut. In and out. Across and away. Changing over time and across needs. Simple, clever, stylish. London-based architectural firm Openstudio. Of course you will remember the last project here. "Le Cabinet", Leinster Square won the Apartment Therapy Award for the "Smallest Coolest Apartment 2007". A perfect little puzzle box of an apartment. A mere 26 square metre footprint. Now that is clever!
