Reader's home - a tiny Swedish apartment

Karin, a devoted DTI reader from Umeå, Sweden, is selling her apartment and sent us a link to the real estate listing. It is a tiny studio that has been completely renovated. It's adorable, and perfect for someone without a lot of stuff - which is SO not me. Although how fun would it be to have a little pied-à-terre in Sweden! I love the little alcove bedroom with handy open clothes storage.

Gorgeous! Let's pool our funds and buy it. It can be the DesireToInspire timeshare.

...the wooden hanging lampshade of the kitchen table, the smokey gray tiles, the rectangular marble tiles, the curved sofa ... sweet.

Love the kitchen table, where can I find it? (I live in Sweden too) I hope it's not vintage...

I don't see a TV in this home. Neither a bookcase or desk. What does the owner do in the spare time? maybe she cooks... Although the smell and that open clothes storage doesn't go so far in my opinion.

I'm sorry, but no. This is not a tiny apartment.

This is a lovely apartment if one could manage to pare one's belongings down to a very, very few items and managed to own less than one weeks worth of clothing and very few books or magazines. I would like to see when it is actually being lived in, not arranged for sale or a photo shoot.

I'm always on the property section of Sweden's The Local dreaming of my own Swedish studio. This is not atypical. There are a lot of students in Sweden who just don't have the collections of "junk" we have here in the States ... at least not yet, anyway. Paring down is easier than most people think. Getting started is the hardest part.

Thanks everyone för your comments. It's always interesting to listen to others opinions about one's home!

It's taken me 5 times of moving for pairing down my things. I can recommend to get your neighbors together and arrange a flea market. And why save a lot of books and magazines? I read them and then sell them/return them to friends or the library. In that way I also save a lot of money - and most important of all I help saving the environment by not consuming to much. But I would say that the best part is that it's so much easier to keep it clean and simple when you don't have that much belongings.

Annika, sorry but it's vintage. I got it from my grandmother and painted the bottom white to make it 'lighter'.

Ral, you're right - I cook in my spare time and knit a lot. Instead of a TV I use my laptop to watch TV-shows and so on. But seriously there's not that much spare time to talk about - when I'm not at work I'm involved in lots of projects for e.g. an Independent Cinema called "Folkets Bio". And there's no smell from the cooking, I've installed a great kitchen fan.

Alex, maybe not tiny but I wouldn't say that 35m2 is that big either.

The short lady, this is actually how it looks when I'm living here. OK, I don't have fresh roses all the time but except for that. :)

Beautiful! I used to collect books of favorite authors but the last few years I have not bought any that were not ebooks or borrowed from the library. Amazing how much space it saves since I read 2 to 3 books a week.

Love the use of minimal space!

Karin, this apartment is just amazing -- so incredibly well thought out. Kim, thank you so much for posting it.

I hope you both don't mind, but I did a pretty detailed walk-through calling out all its great features on Yahoo! Homes' Spaces blog. I've also linked prominently and, um, laudatorily (is that a word?) back to DTI and, of course, the property listing.

Karin, if you'd like to email me, I'd love to get more details. My email is just my first initial and last name at yahoo-inc.com.

And anyone else who's reading this and has tips or (especially!) photos, I'd love to hear from you. (Is that OK to say? Kim, feel free to edit this out of my comment if it seems like I'm trying to steal from you! I'm really not.)

Your shower screens look very similar to the ones we produce & sell in the UK. It would be interesting to find out what the name of the company who produces them is. We are called Unishower & had heard that there were similar ones in Sweden. Our Unishower wet room screens can also fit onto our curved shower tray too. Do you know the name of the company who produces them? Great idea & look great too, even if I say so myself!

I've lived on a yacht on the West coast of Canada for more than 15 years quite comfortably. Now I'm thinking of building a house with a small studio incorporated. So I'd have to add a large window at the left wall for light and inspiration. Mes compliments, c'est merveilleux. As well as positively inspiring for my home design not yet available.. Je desire donc!

Robyn B, What a great idea! That's a perfect way of saving space, keeping the dust away and lightening your heart (and home) from piles of books.

Tracy L, I'm sorry but I don't know the name of the company who produces the shower screens. I had a look at them for a logo or so but I couldn't find one.

I truly love this place, the architect but not the interior designer. Too much cutter. Too many chairs, too many tables and a useless couch that takes up half the room as well as too many tables. An 8 foot window in the left wall would make the place look twice as large. Of course I'm not thinking apartment. I'm thinking house in the country. "I would never live in an apartment or a city. (fire traps) (noise and lack of privacy). The widow overlooking the gardens below the mountains or the sea/lake. The size is what impresses me. Circa 3x5 M or 10x15 feet + bath and hall. The World needs this sort of designing.

This is Dreamy House for living :)
