A classic, modern living room

The layering of texture, the mix of modern and old, high-end and low, a colour palette of black and white warmed by rich caramels. Simply delicious. A classic, modern living room by Austin-based Claire Brody Designs.

Main Street Oriental Rugs

I love having rugs scattered throughout my house. They are such an easy way to make a space extra cozy, and a bonus is they keep your toesies warm in the winter and as I discovered last week while emptying out my main floor, are AMAZING at keeping the noise levels down by absorbing sound. I have a few in my living room (one is under my desk so my chair doesn't ruin the floor), one by the kitchen sink to make dish washing a little less annoying, and I want to put one on my side of the bed so when I wake up my feet don't freeze. Main Street Oriental Rugs is a great source for oriental rugs. With a storefront in Ellicott City, Maryland, they also have an online shop, an Etsy store and you can find them on Twitter and Instagram. They carry over 3,000 rugs - high quality, hand-knotted, 100% wool and/or silk, Persian, Oriental, and contemporary style. And depending on your preference they stock both vintage and new rugs. (They even offer cleaning, repair, and restoration services if you're in the area). Here is just a small sample of what you'll find at Main Street Oriental Rugs...

Amber Interiors

I have been a fan of Amber Lewis' designs for what seems like ages, but just realized I have never done a feature on her work here before. So here you have it - bohemian chic at its finest! A white walled background is the perfect backdrop for warm woods, kilim rugs, graphic pillows, plants and the coziest of furniture. Vintage combined effortlessly with modern, Amber's signature style continues to impress me with each project she completes. (She even has a shoppe!)

Some rearranging and a new rug

When I painted my living room last month I had decided to fill the shelves at the back of the room with plants. I quickly realized what a dumb idea that was given the lack of decent sunlight. So the other day I grabbed all of the knick-knacks (and some others) I had previously displayed on my mantel and swapped them with the plants. I then piled the plants on the bench I had in front of the window. I am much happier with this arrangement and so seem my plants (except one but I don't want to talk about it - it was my favourite).

Most of these items were picked up on antiquing travels. Air plant holder = na coille Studio. Phrenology bust = Urban Barn. Nun dolls & vintage camera = High Jinx. Ceramic bug = Wunderkammer
