Apartment remodel

I love the deep window recesses which mean wide ledges for perching. I love the holes above the radiator. I love the pull down screen/blind for lazy Sunday afternoon movie watching but most of all I love that this is a cool family home, full shelves and chalk wall scrawl and all. A renovated home in Vancouver

We received an email from Amber of Māk Interiors, about an extensive renovation project she took on of a heritage home in Vancouver’s South Granville area. The home had great bones, but needed to be completely gutted to open up the tiny rooms and make the home more spacious and family friendly. It is a wonderful example of how you can modernize a traditional/historic home without losing its character. And I am all for the if-you-can't-make-it-work-gut-it philosophy.

Here are a couple of before photos.

And this is what it looks like after Amber had her way with it. :-) You can read more about it here

A renovated Park Slope brownstone

And here I thought my new home had lots of beautiful architectural detail. This Park Slope, NY brownstone renovated by Abelow Sherman Architects has incredible panelling, moldings, stained glass and inlaid hardwood flooring at every turn. I am a bit sad that every single bit of woodwork has been painted (and white, blah). Yes folks, I have turned into ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE! (LOL)

A resplendent revival

This resplendent, inviting home in Sydney of Justin van den Berg and Michael Arends was featured on The Generalist and is a must-share. The 1865 terrace home has such stunning period features, and was lovingly restored and renovated to make it much brighter (a skylight was added over the very dark stairwell) and more open (a wall was removed in the kitchen to open it to the dining space). Mostly furnished with auction pieces the owners have restored, as well as cool trash finds (like the row of theatre seats in the dining room), the home is super cozy and unique.

St Lukes Mews

I thought on this beautiful Sunday I would share one of the cutest homes I have ever seen. It is a completely refurbished (by Fossey Arora) 3 story mews home in London's St. Lukes Mews that happens to be where the movie Love, Actually was filmed. It is SO GORGEOUS! The dark exterior makes it modern and stand out from all the other homes, the top floor kitchen/dining/living room combo is bright and inviting, the 2nd floor master bedroom suite is warm and relaxing, and the ground floor features a cozy sitting room and guest bedrooms. I love that the home has history, and was decorated traditionally but with lots of modern touches to keep it fresh and current. It is pretty much perfection. It is currently for sale with Domus Nova if someone wants to scoop it up! ;)
