A mid-century remodel

Mid-century style homes have intrigued me for as long as I can remember. They are few and far between here in Ottawa. I used to have a landlord who lived in a gorgeous one (my husband told me he recently saw it listed for $1.2M) and I loved stopping by his house, even if it was to bring him rent cheques ;). This home in Eagle Rock, California was remodeled by architect William Howard and the result is mid-century marvelousness! We remodeled the interior and exterior of this 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house using mid-century modern colors and materials. We removed several walls at the top floor to create an open floor plan. When the project was spaced planned, we have five seating areas in the upper main space, each with its own connection to the spaces. We used a dark walnut for the flooring and cabinetry and we contrasted it with bright white for walls, counters and wall cabinets. We vaulted the ceiling through the entire main space and restored the existing fireplace. The gable glass below the roof beam allows for the exterior garden and light to illuminate the interior of the house.

A basement renovation

I unfortunately have never had the pleasure of renting/owning a home that didn't have an unfinished and often really gross basement, so this project has me VERY EXCITED. H2 Design + Build converted a dark, dingy unfinished basement into a light filled family hub in the historic Seattle neighborhood of Capitol Hill. This seemingly ambitious project included the addition of a new staircase, mudroom, guest suite, kitchenette, family room, recreational room, and laundry room. The owners wanted it to feel like an extension of the rest of the house so they wanted high end details which work so SO well here. Now I want to redo my basement! (Check out previous features of their work here and here)

A Park Slope gut renovation

Take a 4-story Romanesque Revival multi-residence brownstone in Park Slope built in 1899. Completely gut it, and add CWB Architects and Pilaster Contracting for 2 years of renovations. Restore part of the parlour floor, add a floor-to-ceiling windowed addition combined with some decor magic from Tamara  Eaton and you have a pretty spectacular "new" home. Then put it on the market for $7.5 M.

A rescue in Melbourne

The talented folks at Robson Rak Architects took this tired Victorian home in Melbourne and transformed it into a modern masterpiece, while renovating the existing structure and restoring the façade. It must be an incredible feeling to walk under that ornate porch, through the front door, under gorgeous original arches and you are lead into BOOM - a large, open and bright space that is really stunning. All of that reclaimed wood lends a bit of nature to the space and keeps it from being too cold. Respecting the old and embracing the new.
