Modern bathrooms

Doherty Design Studio

As many of you will know I'm in the throes of organising a bathroom renovation. Searching for inspiration, planning, sourcing. I have so many images in my inspiration files I thought I'd share a few. Although my heart is set on a boho, vintage vibe I'm equally drawn to clean lined, contemporary bathrooms. They always look so fresh and fabulous ... and I'm finding that sourcing the look, particularly online, is so much easier which is really important when you're time poor like I always seem to be.

Blending in

When an architect makes an effort to redesign a house that still blends in with its surroundings. Kudos to Toronto architecture firm Johnson Chou for this wonderful project (which maybe can inspire and architect or 2 here in Ottawa). I adore this home inside and out and will be using this as inspiration whenever I get around to doing something with the exterior of my house. (How does a house built in 1940 NEVER have any landscaping done?! It's so embarrassing). And check out a previous feature on this talented firm here

A modern marriage

The facade of this Hawthorn, Melbourne house may be traditional but behind the glossy black door is a sophisticated, contemporary home. The renovation by Austin Design Associates is rich with bespoke details and beautiful finishes. (The joinery is a standout of the property.) A palette of black and white is warmed with golden wood and metal in the open plan kitchen/dining/living areas while a playful dose of greens and yellows is a surprise in the family room. A beautiful home. A perfectly modern marriage of the old and the new.

Brunswick House by Preston Lane

"Key to the clients’ brief for Brunswick House was to provide better connections between the indoor and outdoor spaces and optimize the use of natural light throughout the house. Soft light bounces off the water of the new lap pool onto the ceiling intermingled with gentle shadows from the trees in the adjacent property on the western boundary. The crisp lines of the fine steel window frames and perforated mesh box overhead provide a contemporary addition to the original double storey Victorian terrace which intentionally contrast the original period features."

Brunswick House by Melbourne-based architectural firm Preston Lane rounds out a week that had more than it's fair share of extensions and renovations to older homes in Australia. It may sound like bragging but I really believe that Australian architects are masters of the addition. It's not just about extra space but about light, transition between inside and out, modern, often open plan living and a distinction between old and new, of due respect and reference to the original but also a celebration of the best of contemporary design.
