In-Between Room

"Additions reflect upon the lives of both the inhabitants and the houses themselves. The in-between room is a small, celebrated addition at the rear of an existing Queenslander, one which binds and redefines an existing detached two level tower and claims the interstitial space as its own.

This new room is designed as a counterpoint to the interiors present in the original house. An 'exploded space' which recognises the external walls of both house and tower as its positive edges and treats the remaining elevations as transparencies. A threshold territory engaged with the landscape, accessing the long distant views. The internal belly of the folded plywood ceiling follows the geometry of the frame, drawing the eyes up in an unobserved chapel effect. The grounded concrete slab alludes to the notion of an external courtyard, indeed the in-between room has been designed as an ambiguous space considered more natural when opened than closed."

Exciting new Australian architecture that explores the sense of place and space as well as the interaction between occupants and building. In-Between Room by Brisbane-based Phorm architecture + design.

Studio Maclean

We've long been obsessed by Jason Maclean's work (here) but I must say that I'm elevating my obsession to superfan status after seeing this minimalist kitchen in his West London renovation. Yes the rest of the house is starkly chic but this kitchen is a standout. Form follows function with a simplicity that is strikingly beautiful. By Studio Maclean.

Simple sophistication

A case study in sophisticated simplicity, this Toorak Apartment by Griffith Design Studio looks effortless but don't be deceived. Its minimalist black and white palette with accents of wood and brass is beautifully and carefully composed.

A home in the Laurentians by APPAREIL architecture

What a dreamy, modern cottage-type home that was recently transformed by Montreal firm APPAREIL architecture. Built in 1922 and located in the Laurentian Mountains of southern Québec, this firm was challenged to create harmony between the exterior and interior, all with timeless and Nordic aesthetics.

The new façade is now punctuated with large windows, especially towards the rear of the house, opening it up to the surrounding forest. White was used throughout the house to give a bright and sleek look. Elements such as the kitchen ceiling and the thickness of some walls were preserved, as a nod to the past of the house and its many transformations.
