Intermode

Intermode, an Australian modular housing company, creates dream homes. And these four homes would without a doubt be a DREAM to inhabit.

The coastal Mornington Peninsula hamlet of Blairgowrie has always inspired exciting contemporary architecture. With its rugged terrain, sloping hills, wind-swept tea-trees and sand dunes, the typography provides a rich backdrop for robust architectural expressions. Situated on a sloping site that opens up to a large tract of nature reserve, this Intermode beach house is subtlety tied to its tree line. The shell, painted in darker colours, disappears into the land, ensuring seclusion. In a conscious gesture, the low-slung building has been purposefully tucked into the site to enhance privacy but also to create a process of discovery.

Nestled in a canopy of trees in the Dandenong Ranges, the Emerald House is the soul of discretion. Surrounded by thick foliage and tall maple and oak trees, the house dissolves into its landscape, creating an almost tree house-like atmosphere.

now this is narrow

I am always intrigued by narrow homes as I live in one and wish it wasn't, so it's always interesting to see how people design around narrow spaces and how homeowners cope. FORM / Kouichi Kimura Architects managed to build a minimal masterpiece on a piece of land that is 4m by 35 m, making it a total of 2.7 m wide and 27 m long. I love all the grey - on the exterior and in the gorgeous hardwood and concrete flooring. Soft walls made of curtains are brilliant to keep the space from being too cold, and are great space savers. I'd certainly be taking cues from this home if I had to build a narrow home when rebuilding (thankfully my lot is "normal" size). (Thx Aimee!)

Nook Architects

Sometimes I crave simplicity. My life is pretty much non-stop work and the idea of coming home to a simple, raw, calm minimalist space really appeals to me. Of course, this will never ever happen but I can look at spaces and dream that I can live without stuff. Like this apartment by Barcelona's Nook Architects. LOVE the lighting/clothes rail strips, and the sections of hardwood flooring amidst the concrete (particularly when it joins into a bench).

Wrightson Stewart

Brisbane based interior design firm Wrightson Stewart create sleek, stylish, masculine spaces, clean lined and contemporary. Their work is sharp like a well honed knife cutting through the frou frou and excessive. Unless you like your minimalist luxury in excess that is. With their latest design for a Teneriffe Warehouse Apartment shortlisted for both the Australian Interior Design Awards 2013 and 2013 HOUSES Award (and coming soon to Desire to Inspire, right guys?) principals Steven Stewart and Ian Wrightson have shared images of their inner city studio and a pop up bar for the La Boite Theatre with us to whet our appetites until the awards are announced.

Casa Federica

Help! I am working 16 hours a day at the moment. Too many jobs. Too many exciting projects coming to fruition. I need a holiday. Even just a weekend break. But alas! Looks like it will have to be a "virtual" holiday instead. You'll find me here in my dreams this weekend. Casa Federica in the rolling hills of Noto in Sicily. A minimalist box perched above the sparse landscape with views to the sea. Still and stylish. A perfect retreat.
