Are classy mid-century modern spaces your thing? Then I think you'll appreciate the work of New York interior designer Damon Liss. His portfolio is packed with stunning mid-century furnishings, and some beautiful timber pieces that I'm completely drooling over. It's a step back in time but on the other hand timeless and elegant. Some chair porn never hurts. :)
I seem to be a little slow trying to keep up with the latest in blogs, magazines etc. these days, but I was grateful last night to catch up on the last couple of issues of one of my favourite online magazines, and Canadian to boot, Covet Garden. Last month's issue ROCKED, featuring the Toronto home of Shaun (co-owner of a shop selling handmade works by mostly Canadians) and Todd (owner of a flower shop). It's an 1875 Victorian that they have spent 13 years renovating, and pimped it out with an eclectic mix of mid-century (ie. grandma's couch) and modern furniture and art. Now this is an inspiring and creative home!
FLO: (noun.) The state of mind, process, or way of being abundantly present. Located in Long Beach, California, FLO Design Studio specializes in restaurants, spas and boutique hotels and residences, and can spruce up any one of those in mid-century, industrial, hollywood regency style and make it work. Megan, principal designer/partner is known for her ability to combine global glamour with spiritual edge. Megan's designs focus on the integration of vivid emotional and visual texture. Her indoor and outdoor spaces incorporate powerful mid-century lines, geometry, sculptural and organic forms and materials, and are influenced by the multi-ethnic pulse that is one of the defining characteristics of Los Angeles.
I adore this home of architect Nicolas Schuybroek that he renovated. It was a slum dwelling and with a minimal budget we've been able to renovate it from the ground floor all the way up. We're standing in my office, which used to be a well-known gastronomic restaurant and back in the forties this space housed a butcher shop. The beautiful tiles on the wall remind us of that period. First, I was thinking of removing them because they aren't in good condition. But now I'm glad I didn’t. The same goes for other decorative elements in the house, such as the fireplace, the moldings, the wooden doors and floors and the staircase. We really wanted to preserve the volumes and charm of the building, although its charm is largely defined by the collection of furniture. The classic style mixed with midcentury iconic lighting and furniture and neutral colour palette really do it for me. I could absolutely live here.
