Bassiviere

Is it only Tuesday? Not Friday? Still most of the working week in front of me? Urgh! Time for a virtual escape to the French countryside. To Bassiviere in the Lot-et-Garonne region, a traditional farmhouse and 17th century outbuildings reimagined as contemporary barn chic holiday apartments. Want to runaway with me?

The Imaginarium

I remember the first time I entered stylist Sibella Court's bijou shop of wonders The Society inc. in Paddington, Sydney. I was overwhelmed by her wonderful wares. I wanted to hide under a table and only crawl out again at closing time and pretend the Paddington terrace house was all mine to explore. Now my fantasies can come true. Sibella has opened a new warehouse in St Peters and the terrace house is available to rent on airbnb.  "An imaginarium ... a quiet oasis offering the curious traveller a treasure trove of curiosities, artisan objects & furniture, a vast reference library ..." See. Dreams do come true.

Hiding out in Hotel Hotel

I'm running away from Christmas. Who else is in? And I'm not escaping to a hip, happening must do destination ... or am I? For a long time many of our nations' capitals have got a bad wrap. Dull, boring hubs of government and not much else. Just ask Kim. She lives in Ottawa. Things are changing, at least in Australia's national capital Canberra. How much more hip and happening can the new Hotel Hotel get? So cool it's positively frosty ... that's if it wasn't so hot. Anyone else want to run to Canberra? At least until Christmas is over?

Have we got everything?

Got a good book? Packed your hat? We might do some walking. Definitely the markets. We should be able to pick up some great fresh produce on the drive there so just pack some basics. I plan to cook up a storm in that kitchen. And some really good bath salts. Soaking for an obsecene amount of time is plan B. OK. I think we're ready. Love a weekend away in the country and nothing is more perfect than an historic house and a lush garden setting. Aghadoe Estate, Springmount, Victoria.

Casa Solaris

Michael Grimm sent along some of his photos that came at the perfect time because I am NOT READY for the 30 cm of snow we are supposed to get and he was complaining about Brooklyn weather. So how about a little virtual trip to Vieques, off Puerto Rico... Designed by architect John Hix, hotel Hix Island House now has a guest house called Casa Solaris, which is entirely run on solar power. The house is designed to take advantage of trade winds, and the concrete is an unexpected contrast to the lush island landscape. The addition of yellow keeps it from being too sterile.
