Benches

I have benches on the brain, as the one from ReOrient that I purchased last weekend was delivered yesterday. I have a random grouping of chairs at my dining table, and some of them I've been wanting to get rid of, so I figured I could use the bench on one side and my 2 white Panton S chairs and an Eames shell chair on the other. To my horror, the bench is about a HALF INCH too long. *&^%!!! There has got to be a way to rectify this but so far I haven't come up with anything yet. Since I'm home sick with an awful cough today I will see what I can do. If there is nothing I can do about it (likely), the bench will reside under my living room window, and act as an end table for the couch, a perch for the cats to bird watch, and a spot to put shoes on/off at the front door. (Only in a 12' wide house can you have something perform 3 functions just because it's long). Benches are, in my humble opinion, a very underused piece of furniture. They are great in a living room when you want a good sight-line into the next space but need the seating. Benches are handy at a dining table because they can push under the table (if they're not too long like in my case!) and not take up space. They are cute at the end of a bed to stash books and extra blankets, and fabulous in an entryway to throw your purse on and sit to put on shoes. How about in a bathroom to toss your clothes on before jumping into the shower? I also love them in a hallway to fill the void since they are typically nice and narrow. Here is a round-up of photos of benches I found in my stash. (P.S. I did a bench post a while back here).

ReOrient

Yesterday I didn't have a packed schedule of chores/errands so I convinced my husband to take a little trip with me across the river to Wakefield, Québec to visit the showroom of ReOrient. Michelle, the owner, had emailed us last week to let us know about her shop (I was unaware of it's existence) that sells 100% reclaimed teak furniture from Indonesia, and that they were having a big showroom sale this weekend. The hubby and I were immediately smitten with their furniture from the moment we walked up to the porch where some items were on display - and ended up purchasing 2 of them. :-) Michelle explained the process of how they come across this reclaimed wood - the majority of it being from old furniture or buildings being torn down. Her pieces are then crafted in Indonesia and shipped here. It is a very green company - the bench I purchased has a metal base, which is recycled metal melted down and shaped into bars made to resemble scaffolding. They also ensure that the manufacturing process does not exploit the environment, animals or people involved. Here is a sample of the items at ReOrient (to note - the showroom is closed during the winter, but their products are carried by several retailers in Ontario and Québec).

We purchased the bench and the stool above. The bench will be delivered this week (sadly, too long to fit in our car) but the stool came home with us - photos at the end of the post.

Matt Blatt store opening and competition

Thursday night in Brisbane saw several hundred people join me at the opening of Matt Blatt's new store in Doggett St, New Farm. What a great night! I turned up a little early to take some snaps. I knew once the crowds poured in it would be difficult  to do anything except talk furniture and blogs, champagne in hand. I'm really excited about the new pieces that Matt Blatt are introducing to their already extensive range. Lots of ethnic and colour brights, quirky boho and beautiful contemporary timber pieces. Loved the rugs too but that's no surprise because we all know I have a rug fetish. Thank you to the Matt Blatt crew for inviting me to be part of their special night. If you are in the south east Queensland area you really should drop in to the New Farm store and say hi to Aleks and his team.

P.S. Don't forget our Matt Blatt giveaway for Australian readers. It is open for another week and I can tell you that having seen the chairs in person they are fab! Talk about a summer tonic. Head over here to enter.

Design Journey 2012

Entries for the 2012 Corporate Culture Design Journey competition are now open. Design Journey was originally created to support the future of Australasian design and since its growth it has become an annual event. The lucky winner will have their design prototyped and exhibited at the Saturday in Design Fair the following year as well as having the unique opportunity to travel to Copenhagen to meet Rolf Hay, founder of Hay and Christian Rasmussen, Head Designer of Fritz Hansen. Past winners of the Design Journey competition include Arnold Lane (2004 & 2005), Ross Didier (2006), Futurespace (2007), Kirk Lenard (2008), and Gavin Harris (2009). This year's brief involves designing a suspended LED lighting pendant, which fulfils the needs for both residential and commercial use but you can find out all the details here.
