Reader request - tiled floors

I finally had a chance to get to a reader request, and this one comes from Kristin: "My husband and I have a basement to floor. Due to an intermittently angry washing machine, we need something waterproof. We have decided that tile is be the best option. Do you have inspiration photos of tiled floors? This is going to be our second family room, so the tile can't look out of place with sofas and pillows and dog beds." I sure do have some tiled floor photos for inspiration to get some ideas brewing. (On a side note, one of my favourite durable flooring choices that I hope to be able to use in the basement of the addition my husband (teeheehee) and I want to put on our house is coin pattern rubber flooring like this).

Reader request - small bathrooms

Here is request #2 from Jeffrey and Julia of Stamford, CT: "I found your site when trying to come up with ideas for my small but master bathroom. My wife and I have three kids and are stuck with a bathroom that needs gutting and we have no idea where to start with picking colors and textures to do this project (on a dime, too.) The space is approx. 100 inches long and 60 inches wide. The sink and toilet is on the left, just as you enter this rectangle space and we have about 32 inches of shower space where we want to convert into a tub. I am at a total loss for what to do. I just know the shower wall is rotting and needs to come out. That causes me to loose all the other walls, too so it has become a total re-do, therefore leaving me with a blank canvas. All I know is that it needs storage and I want it to be the center piece of our already black wood furnitured-home, with white walls and ceilings, and natural-colored wood parquet floors. Ugh. So I write you in desperation for inspiration for something to do with our (god-awful) space and need for our simple family of five." Yikes. That is quite a small bathroom, and a master at that. I personally would try and leave the shower instead of a tub because a shower will save space (plus how do you fit a tub in 32"?). Here are some very small bathrooms that I hope can provide you with some ideas on where to go with your teeny tiny space.

House facade help

I could not resist posting this request we got recently from Marcelo and Shanti: "We bought a house for us and our three kids... but the facade is ugly as it gets... Please help us as our kids are ashamed from the house..." I have to admit that this may be one of the ugliest exteriors I've ever seen.

Does anyone have any suggestions for these poor folks? I'm clueless when it comes to exteriors - and when it's this wacky I'm even more clueless. (I would like to make one suggestion - that you save up some cash to get that top left window replaced so it can be the same size as the others).

Reader dilemma

Angela sent us an email with a dilemma that I'm hoping you all can help her with: "I have recently purchased a small red brick home that was built in 1930 - I love it and cannot wait to get my hands on it. Currently the house is red brick with a heinous John Deere Green trim that I am dying to paint but I have yet to stumble across some really great inspiration or references. It has natural shingles so there are technically three fields of area that need color, red brick being the majority. I love the idea of something slightly eccentric but still classy - like the grey house with the lime green door. I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction." Having never had the opportunity to be able to paint the exterior of a house, I am sort of at a loss as to suggestions for Angela, which is why I thought I'd open it up to all of you. Her house is absolutely ADORABLE as you'll see below, so getting rid of the awful green will make a huge difference and make her home even more fantastic with great curb appeal. Leave your ideas in the comments!

Reader's home

Remember this? Roeschel's living room was part of our DIY+ e-design consultation with interior designer Jason Martin, recently named one of House Beautiful's Next Wave 20 interior designers.  Roeschel has finally finished and emailed us with the results. It's an amazing transformation! A job well down Roeschel. Such a beautiful and calm space. Casually elegant and very liveable it's certainly no cookie cutter room with vintage finds and lots of Roeschel's personality shining through. Follow renovation adventures on her blog DIY Showoff especially the before and afters of her own home, a charming 1927 farmhouse. I particularly love her barn!
