Methodist Chapel conversion

It is no secret to regular readers that Kim and I have a "thing" for church conversions. Today's remodel is amazing. A minimalist conversion of a stunning stone-built Grade II-listed former Methodist chapel (1868) in peaceful countryside on the Dorset / Wiltshire border. A once austere house of worship is now an austerely beautiful house to worship. Home in a pyramid

Neko sent us an email with a link from a story that was featured in The New York Times about a year ago that I had to blog about since Jo and I love featuring conversions here on DTI. This one is pretty freaking cool - not our typical church conversion. It's an apartment located in Seattle, 462 feet above the city, in a pyramid atop the Smith Tower occupying the 37th and 38th floors - a total of 1750 sq ft. With views this spectacular, who cares what the apartment looks like??!!

Stalking in the hall

The Mechanics Institute Hall that is. Think Victorian era guild or trades halls. Almost church like. This modern conversion plays with scale and height, positive and negative space, open and enclosed. Love the kitchen, the spiral staircase and the soaring grey ceilings, the clever use of half walls of storage to divide spaces and the privacy of the bedroom and bathroom tucked away in the mezzanine but a little confused by the large box like lights. Mill conversion

A big thanks to Iza who sent us a link to a converted mill in Poland (where famoust Polish writer Stefan Zeromski created one of his major novels). Jo and I are both huge fans of all conversions, particularly churches as we've featured several here before. This mill is pretty sweet, although is totally against all code (here in Canada anyway) with all those raised sections and stairs with no railings.

Goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married

Well maybe not married. At least in not this deconsecrated and now renovated little brick chapel in West Hobart, Tasmania. Yes I'm stalking Tasmania! The history! The cutest buildings. This sturdy early 1900's building has been transformed with a contemporary warehouse vibe but the chapel shell remains as does the simple utilitarian feel. It was plain and functional in the praise of the Lord when it was a church and now it is minimal and functional in the service of the owners. Link here while it lasts.
