A modern extension to an inner Sydney house sees contemporary concrete and timber "boxes" provide the owners with courtyard living as well as extra living space. I may not enjoy spending my weekends working but I am thoroughly enjoying bringing you this working on a Saturday series. After all who wouldn't want to go to work when it looked this good? The Blackwood Street Bunker, an unloved 70s office building in North Melbourne given a new lease on life by Clare Cousins Architects.
New against old. Blocks of concrete and narrow recessed glass. Outward and in and the relationship between the two. Open plan extension to a Victorian era house where the new contrasts against the old. Internal walls of concrete are warmed by wood. It's a restrained palette of concrete, black aluminium, stainless steel and oak. Glebe House by Nobbs Radford Architects.
I never thought I would catch myself typing the words ferro-cement organic. Being of a certain age I have vague memories of chicken wire and concrete disasters lurking in under house games rooms or pseudo hippy hang outs. The type of weekend DIY that seemed like a good idea at the time until the sheer scope of the job overwhelmed the home owner. I blame it on Antoni Gaudí, Frank Lloyd Wright and Antti Lovag. The Hollander House, built in the late 60s early 70s by architect David Hollander, is no weekend hodge podge. Now recognised as a icon of Australian organic architecture its current interior designer owner has listed the house for sale with Modern House.
