On the blog that is. I'm still waiting for the boat in real life. If I did have a yacht I'd have one just like this refurbed 1961 cruiser by Peter Wilds Design. Warm polished wood, gleaming metal, sophisticated black and white. Pass me my boat shoes and my captain's cap. It's love at first sight.
I featured a couple of projects last month by Vancouver's Fox Design Studio (a Coquitlam townhouse and a West Vancouver home) and I have another small project to share. Love the mix of modern, industrial and cabin-esque vibes. They really rocked the use of colour here. Full redecoration and partial renovation of a Coal Harbour townhome. We got the opportunity to tackle a smaller project for a Vancouver couple that let us play with color and texture throughout their luxury townhome. Grasscloth, marble, sheepskins and some salvage wood chevron all played key roles in creating this curated space.
I wanted to feature this home a few months ago when its interior designer Veronica Martin had contacted me but I had to wait for its appearance in the spring issue of Ottawa magazine. Now that it has hit the streets, here it is! I love this addition and renovation of an 80 year old home in the Wellington Village neighbourhood of this fine city of Ottawa. It brings some modern amenities and sophistication to an older home (that coincidentally looks like it may have been designed by the same architect as my home!) while keeping the stunning features like leaded glass windows and curved ceilings intact. The new kitchen is an absolute gem - the simple white glossy cabinetry is taken to another level with the black hardware making a subtle graphic impact. And lawd half mursey that light fixture over the dining table! *SWOON* Fantastic job Veronica! So glad to see someone bringing style and class to this city. (Photos: Urszula Muntean Photography)
How to modernize an old home on a tiny lot and make it the best house on the street! The intent of the remaking of this narrow 125-year-old residence was two-fold: to increase natural light in the interior using contrast, and to reduce the house's ecological impact.An increase of natural light is accomplished through both physical and perceptual means. Physically, the long, narrow house - only 11 feet wide on the rear façade - was reconfigured to allow direct sight lines to new window openings. Perceptually, contrast was used as a means to "brighten" internal spaces without direct access to natural light. Contrasting elements are placed in proximity to produce an intensified effect. At each level, the stair is punctuated by a black element to define space — be it floating bookcases housing the owner's collectibles, or a chalk board wall for play — and to create contrast to visually intensify the natural light spilling down from above. Rich, jewel like accents mixed with metallics and mirror play against a neutral base and beautiful light flooding in through large windows in this small apartment by Vancouver-based Peter Wilds Design. The mirror box bedroom is big on style if small in size. Just as impressive is that the feel of the space can be refreshed as simply as changing out the colours of the accessories.
